What to Know

Critics Consensus

Much like its subject's time in office, Nixon might have ended sooner -- but what remains is an engrossing, well-acted look at the rise and fall of a fascinating political figure.

Rated: A Sep 1, 2022 Full Review Sheila Reid Women in the Life Nixon was not a very likable man and this re-enactment of his life is consistent with that. However, the film does provide insight as to how the late, former president attained his stature as well as how he lost it. Sams K Oliver Stone describes perfectly the rise and fall of a controversial figure like Nixon. Anthony Hopkins is perfect as always. Great acting, everything's good. Not a masterpiece, but very very good. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 08/30/24 Full Review TWMax65 While Anthony Hopkins portrays the character very well, Richard Nixon is a hard main character to sympathize with and be invested in in a positive way from an audience perspective. The movie goes on for some time too and was hard to watch in one sitting, especially since it was about a president like that. However, the acting was noteworthy as well as the directing and cutting in and out of historic American moments and footage. There were several great scenes, like when Nixon visited the Lincoln Memorial to speak with the students and how he struggled earlier in the film to make it to the presidency and market himself positively to the public. However, when it cut back to his past and family I became less interested. I admire and like Oliver Stone's work, always. However he has made better films about better people. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/30/24 Full Review Rohan P I watched this for my AP US History project, and I found it to be very slow, and I did not like how the movie jumped around so much. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 06/20/23 Full Review Maxime C One of my all-time favorite films, it is carried by the extraordinary Anthony Hopkins in what is, arguably, the greatest performance of his career. Oliver Stone keeps your interest triggered with his unique brand of storytelling and he managed to get the A-game from all involved - be it Robert Richardson with his inventive cinematography, John Williams with his epic, haunting, Revenge of the Sith-foreshadowing score and the cast of exceptional actors. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/07/23 Full Review Audience Member long but that's okay because it's about history, our history. And history of any man tends to be pretty long. Overall, it was thrilling to see Nixon's presidency unravel. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member Serious stuff turns into camp under the blunt instrument of Ollie Stone's movie making. Could have been really good in the hands of a film maker not trying quite so hard to tweak history. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Read all reviews
