Although based on a novel by Barbara Vine (aka Ruth Rendell), it felt to me like something Patricia Highsmith could have conjured up. In fact, I thought more than once about THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY while watching this. And although it doesn't quite hit the heights of the cinematic masterpiece that is RIPLEY, this is still a totally engrossing, intriguing movie about love, obsession and betrayal that had me on the edge of my seat till the very end. All three leads are excellent, particularly Williams, who has the rare ability to make us love and loathe him in equal measure. There are so many twists and turns that I had to watch it twice in order to take it all in - and it was totally worth it. It's actually one of the more intelligent thrillers that I've seen in a long time - it's sexy and sophisticated, it's literate and wonderfully written. And it's a welcome respite for those of us wearied by the cookie-cutter assembly line product we are forced to sit through 90% of the time. Highly recommended!
