Mordaunt Hall New York Times This Biblical spectacle goes on and on as if one hadn't sat through a modern story -- of great quantity, if nothing else. May 21, 2014 Full Review Martyn Auty Time Out A spectacular and ambitious part-talkie epic which marries a Biblical theme (the Flood) with a romance set on the eve of the Great War. Jan 22, 2013 Full Review Variety Staff Variety The Warner staff show everything conceivable under the sun -- mobs, mobs and mobs; Niagaras of water; train wreck; war aplenty; crashes; deluges and everything. Feb 23, 2012 Full Review TV Guide A true "spectacular" in every sense of the word, Rated: 3/4 May 21, 2014 Full Review Fernando F. Croce CinePassion Aiming for De Mille blockbusting, it boasts some fake-Babylonian splendor, though none of C.B.'s lascivious-prurient absurdism. May 21, 2014 Full Review Ken Hanke Mountain Xpress (Asheville, NC) Noah's Ark isn't just a fascinating curio from a very bygone era, it's surprisingly entertaining -- and it is most certainly a spectacle of note. Audience Member This represents a transition from silent to talkie. It used 600,000 gallons of water that was so overwhelming three extras drowned, one injured so badly his leg needed to be amputated, and a number suffered broken limbs which led to implementation of stunt safety regulations the next year. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/08/23 Full Review Audience Member WB's answer 2 Paramount's Cecil b DeMille Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member The stagy, slow epic contrasting the story of Noah's Arc & the First World War. Unfortunately there is much more time spent of the WW1 story than Noah's Arc. This is one of those silent films with audible dialogue sequences. However all the many scenes where the flooding takes place and fantastic & the use of models & real set pieces is terrific. Four Extras actually died in this film due to water flowing to fast & an extras not being able to keep afloat. This film is bogged down by WW1 story but the biblical scenes are terrific. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member I enjoyed this film. It's a story that combines the biblical story of Noah's ark with a romance in World War 1. At first you may wonder how this can work and at times question how it works but it somehow does. It's beautifully done and it does work. This film was made in 1928 when the cross over to talkies were being made. This film illustrates this cross over well. It was made as a silent but later added some sound. This I thought enhanced the film. www.what-to-watch.com Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Ambitious work by Michael Curtiz on the cusp of the sound era. Great pains are taken to draw parallels between a WW1 3-act romantic melodrama and the Biblical flood. Scenes with sound were shoehorned into the melodrama with limited success and it will hardly compete with the Rick/Ilsa/Louis/Strasser tangle Curtiz would weave so perfectly in Casablanca. The Biblical stuff is made on an epic scale and could easily compete with the best Biblical epics of the silent era were it not for the forced historical parallels. Amazing sets are deluged and extras died in the filming. In short, you have a 4-star epic and its conjoined 3-star wartime love triangle in the hands of a genius director who almost makes this schizophrenic jumble work. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member The WWI story is a standard melodrama, but the Biblical story is a spectacular production.
