Adam Mullins-Khatib Chicago Reader The diptych films of Nocturna are at the very least an inventive imagining of an end-of-life story, capturing both the beauty and the melancholy that make up our memories. Jan 22, 2022 Full Review Jeannette Catsoulis New York Times "Nocturna" weaves memory and nightmare into a haunting tale of loneliness and regret. Jan 18, 2022 Full Review Anton Bitel Sight & Sound Falling somewhere between Michael Haneke's Amour (2012) and Florian Zeller's The Father (2020), and playing hide and seek with the emotions, this long, dark night of the soul sends Ulises on a mystical round-trip home to his long-lost wife and family Aug 24, 2021 Full Review Erick Estrada Cinegarage A small map that explores certain possibilities that's reminiscent of Relic. [Full review in Spanish] Jul 13, 2022 Full Review Keri O'Shea Warped Perspective The film offers up a terror of - and respect for - the vulnerability of old age, its recriminations and regrets, and it finds varied and unsettling ways to explore a 'dark night of the soul'. Jan 17, 2022 Full Review Laura Clifford Reeling Reviews Calzada has uncannily made his film itself appear haunted, the whole cloaked in a greenish tinge of decay, Ulises's paternal guilt weighing heavily upon him. Audience Member On the last night of an elderly man's life we witness through flashbacks how he came to be in such a bleak state. Pepe Soriano is brilliant as Ulises, the old man who is losing his memory but not his regrets. There are several chilling moments although not what you would typically expect in a horror. The horror is more of a quiet type, but does play on a fear that most of us have, of growing old and struggling to take care of ourselves and wishing that we could go back to right our wrongs.
