Critics Consensus

Nocturne's thought-provoking themes find themselves at odds with its genre ingredients, resulting in a mild blend that isn't quite pulpy enough.

Still, the way this story unfolds, and how it unpeels its protagonist into a sexually deflowered, master musician is too predictable to be scary, despite a few striking tableaux involving a psychedelic. Go to Full Review

If it's psychological horror you love, Nocturne will be music to your ears. If not super-scary, Quirke's film is an accomplished, uncomfortable tour de force. Go to Full Review

Nocturne, like its brittle protagonist, is good enough at what it does to make you wish it were a little better. Go to Full Review

I found it to be a little convoluted at times, but it recovers with some eye-catching cinematic moments. Go to Full Review

Thematically, [filmmaker Zu] Quirk and her production team have created a very pleasingly atmospheric film with Nocturne. Go to Full Review

Nocturne nonetheless very much plays as a YA horror flick, a kind of baby's-first-Faustian-bargain. Go to Full Review

Alain E @AlainE Nov 12 It never really ignites. Sweeney is doing the best she can with a weak script. Like in other movies she avoids using her physical assets. For example here is her sister who plays the piano showing cleavage. Although the ending is ambiguous, I believe the valid version is that she plays the concert well. If she had fallen on the metal sign someone of the people moving around would have noticed. See more Chris B @Cwisbee Oct 4 Visually and sonically well executed and the drama unfolds at a steady yet slow pace. Well characters are very well acted, especially Sweeney in the lead and it builds tension quite well. If you like non threatening psychological drama-thrillers with very limited horror, Black Swan for example, you will probably enjoy this. See more Eric B 10/15/2024 I'm confused why this one appears so unpopular with audiences. Maybe they were expecting something different? It doesn't break new ground and it has a downbeat ending, but this is a solid, well-acted film: Sweeney is quite good in it, and it's a well-told story about the price of ambition at all costs. Maybe you already knew that, but it's good to remind ourselves every once in awhile. Or maybe not? Maybe you think being cutthroat is what it takes to be successful in life. Then, I guess, this is not your kind of movie, because it is basically a kind of moral fable. Anyway, I thought it was pretty good: it's a well acted, well told story. See more Korra N 08/15/2024 Some great performances & fun direction don't save what's a mediocre script with an even worse ending. Still, if you're a fan of psychological thrillers, give this a watch. See more Kashgar A 02/17/2024 A solid horror movie. Well acted, goes the way you kinda hope it will - and if that makes it predictable, then so be it. I'm siding with the critics on this one rather than the audience's consensus. A good movie See more Stark G 02/01/2024 I watch this because of Sydney Sweeney The movie is good it shows how envy can corrupt people. See more Read all reviews
