It comes pretty close, closer than I anticipated, to recapturing the brilliant and hilarious energy of the play. Of course even a master like Bogdanovich can't quite get it there. Also the movie is hurt by the wrongly triumphant ending.

Very Funny 😁 not sure why it was a box office failure. 🤔. Watching it was good but it's one flaw your just getting into it when the Director played by Michael Cane says cut ✂️ the action starts again and he says cut again and again.... Still it's a great movie nice atmosphere to it and you feel the characters have more too tell. It was offerd to Audrey Hepburn but she said no And Bette Midler was under contract for Sister Act yes she didn't do sister act in the end they gave it to Whoopi.

Something is off and it's not just the noise The late director Peter Bogdanovich and executive producer Kathleen Kennedy with Frank Marshall bring an ensemble cast to the stage adapting the 1982 play of the same name from Michael Caine to Carol Burnett to the late Christopher Reeve to the late John Ritter to the late Denholm Elliot to Julie Hagerty Hired to helm an Americanized take on a British play, director Lloyd Fellowes does his best to control an eccentric group of stage actors During practice sessions, things run smoothly However, when Lloyd and his actors begin a series of performances leading up to a Broadway premiere, chaos ensues Star actress Dotty is quickly passing her prime, male lead Frederick has no confidence, and bit actor Selsdon is rarely sober Can Lloyd get these people to get their act together before opening night? They've only had 2 weeks to rehearse A majority of this takes place on a stage auditorium so we spend a lot of time here The film loses a lot of its brilliance from the original source material but it is a riot seeing these actors play parts they have to get right for their sake and their director

It unavoidably loses some of its brilliance on film: much of the fun was the suspense of seeing live actors survive the demands of the slapstick. But Bogdanovich's frenetic transplant supplies so many belly laughs it seems ill-spirited to complain.
