Chris P @Xiao_Proxies Apr 14 Norbit features Eddie Murphy in multiple roles, primarily as the timid Norbit and his domineering wife Rasputia (who is played in adulthood by Murphy and in adolescence by Lola St. Vil). The premise allows for over-the-top physical comedy and wild character design, but ultimately the film commits itself to stereotypes and absurdity that undermines any lasting charm. Eddie Murphy delivers energetic performances, but his characters are exaggerated to a fault. Rasputia, in particular, is portrayed as an abusive, gluttonous caricature whose presence often pushes beyond comedic boundaries into submission of racial and body stereotypes. Thandiwe Newton brings some grounded humanity as Kate, and occasional jokes land. Sadly, most of the humor relies on outdated tropes and tiresome punchlines, making the plot instantly forgettable. A few bright moments don't save a film that ultimately feels like a misguided attempt at comedy. But at least tou can give it a try for a first watch.
