Audience Member Beautifully cast with believable performances! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Audience Member Was too heavy-handed to start out, the stark absence of dialogue wasn't necessary, but then it picked up steam and the characters grew in complexity once they started talking and getting close to each other. It's a story of a Mexican guy who gets scammed by a Coyote trying to cross the border, and finds some work in Tijuana with an older woman and her younger woman helper who run a small grocery store. He helps out every morning with the heavy lifting, and eventually the older woman seeks him out for romance. Both of the women have essentially been left behind by husbands who crossed the border and never came back for them. He falls for the younger one instead, causing some friction, but he is married himself, and is determined to cross over to make money and pay back his debts. The film grew into its own as it got going, but the empty and silent long beginning half was forced and unecessary, an attempt at some kind of "depth" or trying to be an auteur, and it just wasn't effective or called for here. Instead it felt bleak, empty, isolating, and didn't ring true to Mexico for me. But once it picked up a little in the second half, it felt true and began to work the way the film should. Recommended for those with a tolerance for slow. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member The rough and minimalist Northless, like its protagonist, takes a while to get going on its journey, yet despite said protagonist proving a difficult cypher to enter the story through, eventually our patience is rewarded. Actually, while the familiar scenario of a Mexican trying to illegally enter the U.S. is the main theme of the film, it isn't as interesting as the peripheral situation of the women left behind in Mexico, abandoned by their husbands who have promised to fetch them once they are settled north of the border. Typical men! This isn't without humour or interest, but will be too low key for most. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Earnest Mexican immigration drama follows a young man in Tijuana trying to cross the border, with the help of two women who take him in at a local warehouse. Beautifully shot and well modulated, especially at the beginning, "Northless" ultimately lacks motivation and development of character relationships.
