Peter Keough Boston Globe Though not as polished as "Film," Lipman's "Notfilm" might be that rare instance where the critical commentary is of more interest than the work itself. Rated: 3/4 May 19, 2016 Full Review J. R. Jones Chicago Reader As a documentary, it could use a tighter edit and a more generous music score, but as a research project, it's impressive. May 5, 2016 Full Review Peter Rainer Christian Science Monitor At times, Notfilm resembles a folly about a folly. But in his own way, which manages somehow to be both manic and meditative, Lipman makes it all come together. Rated: A- Apr 15, 2016 Full Review Pamela Hutchinson Silent London There's plenty here to expand your understanding of Film. And film, too. Apr 21, 2020 Full Review Diane Carson KDHX (St. Louis) Running two hours and 10 minutes, NOTFILM offers an intriguing exploration of Beckett's wrestling with the cinematic medium. Aug 29, 2017 Full Review Rich Smith The Stranger (Seattle, WA) Watching dynamics play out is fascinating, as is seeing the never-before-seen backstage bleaknesses, but just make sure you bring a cup of coffee when you see the show. Audience Member Interesting & deep & Leonard Maltin shows up & all but... it's not really well edited. The editing is so atrocious it's hard to have 3 consecutive shots without a cross fade, and half of the other shots fade to black. The holes are filled with a dry narration that supposedly ties everything together but comes across pretty awkward in the whole mess of the edit. Also, this documentary, even tho one could argue they barely have enough footage to string a film together... HAS AN INTERMISSION. Yeah, they play some minor string music for a couple minutes over black, one hour in. Anyway, it's about Beckett so it can't be boring or banal. Worth a watch. Prepare for tons of fades to black.
