Nick M A young nursemaid takes her young charge home with her on a vacation to see her boyfriend, and the eager, yet unprepared boy ends up getting roped into playing nursemaid himself to the little girl as they cross the country by train. This represents a creative departure for Lloyd, as much of the action centers around him trying to figure out how to care for a young girl under trying conditions rather than spending his energy on selfish endeavors. Chaplin has been having considerable success in similar films where he portrays himself as a caregiver for dogs and/or small children, so Lloyd is probably attempting to capitalize on this relatively new trend of comedians in the U.S. portraying themselves as sympathetic rather than chauvinistic. It seems clear that this is geared toward getting more women to see these pictures. Is it coincidence that women had recently obtained the vote? Are they being recognized as a larger driving force behind attendance numbers? Either way, the result is more novel scenarios, and I am all for it.
