Rated: B- Oct 20, 2014 Full Review Anton Bitel Film International knowing trash of the most impressively confounding kind, recalling not just the serial sensationalism of Feuillade but also the early, paranoia-inducing gialli of Argento. Audience Member It's difficult to sum up how shit this film is. 'Les Yeux Sans Visage' by the same director is one of the great European horror/sci-fi films - and this is one of the worst. Horribly shot, terrible acting, awful music and compared to what was going on in Italian genre cinema at the same time, mind-bogglingly banal. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Yes, it does have a pulp atmosphere with a curious improbable plot involving the Knights Templar to marine archaeology to remote-control zombies. Georges Franju continues with the theme of disguise preceded by Eyes Without a Face (the faceless girl in a porcelain mask), Judex (the bird-masked murderer at the ball) and here - a red-masked villain! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member Despite the awful dubbing and some random soundtrack selection I quite enjoyed this one. Yes at times it was rather slapstick and amateurish but there were some great visuals (particularly the red masked villain) and had a slick pace about it. Worth a look. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Audience Member If given a bigger budget and not television quality film this would be one of the coolest movies ever made. Aside from those simple restraints, this is still a cool crime flick and it wouldn't be as good without it's far out plot or characters. And zombies! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member I'm really growing fond of Franju's style, it's very eccentric and pulpy without sacrificing skill. Nuits Rouges is a unique piece of work, it transcends time. Essentially a caper film but layered with oddities that kept me engrossed. Would make a fantastic companion piece with Mario Bava's Danger Diabolik. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Mike M Deeply eccentric crime caper... some part of it is a flics et robbers affair a la Melville, only - instead of paring away at his material, as Melville might - Franju keeps on accruing layers of oddball, unreal flourishes. Certain scenes (notably, our heroes' encounter with an army of marching mannequins) resemble Tom Baker-era "Doctor Who"; and most bizarrely, it all takes place against contemporary (for 1973) locations: a Pong videogame can be glimpsed in the corner of one assignation in a London cafe, yet it's still the sort of film where the villains use poison darts and smokescreens rather than guns to effect their getaways. "Nuits Rouges" remains a curio, but one that now looks so far removed from time or place as to be all but meaningless; you'd never guess it from looking, but this was released one year after "Tout Va Bien".
