      Critics Consensus

Darkly funny, fearlessly bold, and thoroughly indulgent, Nymphomaniac finds Lars von Trier provoking viewers with customary abandon.

Selene Y One of my favorite movies after 2000. Thoughtfully made, deeply meaningful, not to mention darkly humorous and delightful to watch. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/07/23 Full Review Alec B If you you view the film as some kind of twisted allegory for von Trier's career, as has been suggested by many a critic, it works and despite the film's near absurd level of extreme sexual content the whole thing is more moving and funnier than I ever expected. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/10/23 Full Review Fynn A Deeply troubling for someone who believes in Love. Prepare to have your thoughts and emotions played with in a sinister manner forcing you into absolute apathy. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 06/01/23 Full Review ronald h Possibly the most boring film I have ever seen. I avoided watching it for years, figuring that it was basically a sleazy exploitation film masquerading as art. When I finally acquiesced, I discovered that I had been right. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review richard s If it was just pornography, it might've been interesting. However, Lars Von Trier insists on prudishly punishing his audience with didactic pseudo-intellectualism. You can practically hear him laughing derisively as critics praise his "art". Like the worst one-night-stand of your life, only Von Trier is allowed to receive pleasure tonight. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Holly W This movie was erotically enticing yet so investing. The references and concepts by both characters make me so engaged. Emily Gaudette Bitch Media As it turns out, Nymphomaniac: Vol. 1 is delicately told with both humor and sentimentality. Jan 20, 2021 Full Review Adam Nayman The Ringer Nymphomaniac has an amazingly eclectic cast of weirdos and movie stars acting weird, and their stamina goes a long way toward keeping things sweaty, grotesque, and funny for more than four NC-17-rated hours... Mar 27, 2020 Full Review Kate Muir Times (UK) This is Nordic-noir sex, enveloped in a film as complex as it is unforgettable. Jan 2, 2018 Full Review Savina Petkova A Good Movie To Watch Joe's process of self-actualization seems contested and inspiring at the same time, and Gainsbourg is really given the screen time to shine. Rated: 83/100 Nov 23, 2023 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Von Trier takes a dark, uncomfortable, and pointedly unsexy journey into the lows of her sexuality, and the result contains everything an audience expects from a von Trier film by way of strong performances, confronting subject matter, and uneven results. Rated: 2.5/4 Aug 15, 2022 Full Review Robert Sims Lights Camera Austin Lars von Trier makes it easy for us to look past the nudity and explicit sex so we can accept a confident but detached young woman's emotional and physical journey as one guided and defined her addiction.
