Visually striking but thinly scripted, Oblivion benefits greatly from its strong production values and an excellent performance from Tom Cruise.

Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online It's a shame that its poor editing inhibits what could have been a memorable movie. Rated: C+ Sep 7, 2017 Full Review Jason Bailey Flavorwire Here's the trouble with mainstream science fiction filmmaking these days: there's no expectation that an audience is capable of putting things together or waiting for a payoff. Jun 21, 2016 Full Review Chris Stuckmann ChrisStuckmann.com The story that eventually surfaces is no where near as interesting as the mesmerizing look of the film. But director Joseph Kosinski, adapting his own graphic novel, sure knows how to make it look beautiful and evocative. Nov 6, 2022 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Oblivion’s characters do little more than service the puzzle-based plot, leaving the sometimes predictable dialogue to the actors to enhance. Will G I found the story confusing. The visual effects were stunning. Morgan Freeman and Tom Cruise were good actors in this movie. It was interesting that this movie was about drones. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/16/24 Full Review Frank C The plot doesn't make much sense, with all the women standing around helplessly and Tom's character needed to save the day. Not much humor, not much action. Collateral was so much better. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/13/24 Full Review TV D I think this is a very entertaining movie. True, it has a lot of somewhat worn sci-fi tropes, and it's not a particularly profound movie, but it looks amazing, has really good performances and great action and special effects. Definitely a good "popcorn" movie. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/10/24 Full Review Evan G Im honestly shocked this doesn’t have a higher score… Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/07/24 Full Review Brendan H I really liked this movie. I am a little puzzled why RT only gives it 53% but I am thinking that that this low score results from a somewhat rigid application of the "freshness" test. Tom Cruise as Jack Harper comes across well as a bright, pragmatic, capable, adventurous, action oriented individual (the antithesis of a geek). Andrea Riseborough as "Vika" does a terrific job as a conscientious, duty oriented, rule following, "you should and you ought" character. (In the real world Jack and Vika are very well matched). I had expected to see say around 73% on RT. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/27/24 Full Review Audience Member I honestly liked this film, watched it today, first time in a long while. What’s not to like? You have nasty alien space travelling planet destroying AI. Lots of impressive visuals of a destroyed and ruined earth. And Tom Cruise. The sets and prop designs are not too science fiction, just different enough to look futuristic. If I were to change anything I would probably add the attack on earth as the beginning, no dialogue, then open up with Jack waking up…. But hey, it’s just as good as it is, who am I to change anything, to me it’s just a great film. What would I say to those people who talk about seeing bits from other movies, you know, Statue of Liberty, it’s a nod to previous films or an homage, a thank you to those who have led the way in sci-fi films.
