Critics Consensus

Visually striking but thinly scripted, Oblivion benefits greatly from its strong production values and an excellent performance from Tom Cruise.

Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online It's a shame that its poor editing inhibits what could have been a memorable movie. Rated: C+ Sep 7, 2017 Full Review Jason Bailey Flavorwire Here's the trouble with mainstream science fiction filmmaking these days: there's no expectation that an audience is capable of putting things together or waiting for a payoff. Jun 21, 2016 Full Review Chris Stuckmann ChrisStuckmann.com The story that eventually surfaces is no where near as interesting as the mesmerizing look of the film. Rated: B Apr 23, 2015 Full Review Sean Axmaker Stream on Demand There’s no denying that Oblivion is derivative.... But director Joseph Kosinski, adapting his own graphic novel, sure knows how to make it look beautiful and evocative. Nov 6, 2022 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Oblivion’s characters do little more than service the puzzle-based plot, leaving the sometimes predictable dialogue to the actors to enhance. Paul S It was kind of boring at some points, but overall, it was a visually beautiful film and was really entertaining. I definitely recommend it for sci-fi fans! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/25/25 Full Review Korra N A sci-fi masterpiece that's brought down by one too many cliches, Oblivion is saved by phenomenal visuals, great performances, gorgeous cinematography, a beautiful score & thoughtful direction. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/24/25 Full Review Frans B I liked it. Not the best script, not the best directed. BUT, stunning production and Tom Cruise brings a certain air with him, always. Just a laid back and easy viewing for movie night when you're tired after long day and don't want to think too much, just watch the movie and have your popcorn and soda Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/23/25 Full Review C M Very entertaining and with an original premise which is rare since like 2010 Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/23/25 Full Review Davy T Tom Cruise is in this movie. But it’s not a Tom Cruise movie. There is action and sci-fi in this movie. But it’s not an action sci-fi movie. Remove any pre-conceived notions or expectations before watching this film, and you will thoroughly enjoy it. The imagery, sound, and story are gripping. The movie is far from perfect - if you are an impatient movie watcher, it will be tough. It’s fun spotting all the borrowing / influencing from other movies. Be ready to pause + subtitles on + rewind to catch the very important exposition. By the end though: one of my favorite movies I’ve seen in a while, and has gotta be the most underrated movie with Tom Cruise in it (not a Tom Cruise movie!) ever. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/27/25 Full Review Robert Q A very good sci-fi with a sprinkling of Matrix and Top Gun. Minor pacing issues aside (10-sec button is your friend) most of the film is engaging with top-shelf effects! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/25/25 Full Review Read all reviews
