Critics Consensus

Visually striking but thinly scripted, Oblivion benefits greatly from its strong production values and an excellent performance from Tom Cruise.

Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online It's a shame that its poor editing inhibits what could have been a memorable movie. Rated: C+ Sep 7, 2017 Full Review Jason Bailey Flavorwire Here's the trouble with mainstream science fiction filmmaking these days: there's no expectation that an audience is capable of putting things together or waiting for a payoff. Jun 21, 2016 Full Review Chris Stuckmann ChrisStuckmann.com The story that eventually surfaces is no where near as interesting as the mesmerizing look of the film. Rated: B Apr 23, 2015 Full Review Sean Axmaker Stream on Demand There’s no denying that Oblivion is derivative.... But director Joseph Kosinski, adapting his own graphic novel, sure knows how to make it look beautiful and evocative. Nov 6, 2022 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Oblivion’s characters do little more than service the puzzle-based plot, leaving the sometimes predictable dialogue to the actors to enhance. Louis N So slow and boring ! Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/20/25 Full Review Audience Member Tom Cruise did his best. Could have used more characters and better storyline. Basic premise was good. Effects were good. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/17/25 Full Review John C Amazing movie, visually, but not enough to keep you awake from a plot that drags deeper than an east river dredge. Incessant repetition made me feel like the writers didn’t believe a two year-old could follow their plot without retelling it dozens of times. And as usual, the sound engineer, thought we needed eight times the volume to hear the shots, so nonstop raising and lowering the sound to hear the dialogue and avoid defining ourselves at other times. Tom Cruise and Morgan Freeman must’ve been desperate for work in 2013. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/15/25 Full Review NASHVILLE I Oblivion focused on all the wrong details and ignored their assets, which is why you never fully start to engage with the movie. The IDEA of the script is fascinating! The dealbreaker is that the writers wait until the last 20 minutes to pull the trigger on their plot twist, and when they do it’s done in a way that you’re angry at their bad execution. Most of the movie otherwise is spent TALKING about the suspenseful parts, instead of showing you suspenseful parts. Too much conjecture without th adequate illustration. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/11/25 Full Review Andy W A popular science fiction theme of highly evolved life wreaking havoc on earth, but done brilliantly and within the realm of theoretical. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/09/25 Full Review TorQue M This is one of the most underrated Tom Cruise movies. This and Knight and Day are two of my favorites. It's an awesome story and very well put together. I don't know why more people don't like it. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/09/25 Full Review Read all reviews
