After the Germans bomb Stalingrad during World War II, Russian schoolgirl Varya (Olga Goreva) loses both of her parents and must fend for herself as the Nazis invade. To survive, she pretends to side with the Germans and begins to serve the top Nazi officers. Her heart is still with her native country, though, and she cares for Russian pilot Viatkin (Irina Radchenko), who was recently shot down. She then devises a plot to help the pilot escape, knowing she's putting her own life at stake.
