Critics Consensus

Okja sees Bong Joon-ho continuing to create defiantly eclectic entertainment -- and still hitting more than enough of his narrative targets in the midst of a tricky tonal juggling act.

Anupama Chopra Film Companion Okja is a satire on corporate greed and how awful we are. I know people who stopped eating meat after they saw Okja. May 18, 2020 Full Review David Stratton The Australian Essentially a pro-animal liberation movie, this becomes a pretty wild ride as the Korean child doggedly pursues the pignappers all the way to New York Mar 27, 2020 Full Review Karen Han Vice Okja pushes Bong Joon Ho's talent for spanning moods and genre conventions to its limit. The movie features his trademark sharp shifts in tone, but also melds Western imagery, music and cultural touchstones. Dec 20, 2017 Full Review Peter Counter That Shelf At the very least, the film paints a dynamic, moving portrait of our complicated relationship with marketing, animals, capitalism, and our diets. Claudio C Okja (2017) A Tale of Friendship (11,728 – 29 May 2025 – by Claudio Carvalho) In New York City, when Lucy Mirando (Tilda Swinton) assumes the position of CEO of the Mirando Corporation, she announces the development of twenty-six super pigs that will be delivered to twenty-six farmers of twenty-six countries to be created for ten years. After that period, one of them will be considered the best pig of the world. Ten years after, in South Korea, the girl Mija (An Seo Hyun) and her grandfather Hee Bong (Byun Heebong) raised the female super pig Okja in the mountains. Mija considers Okja her best friend. One day, Mirando’s zoologist Johnny Wilcox (Jake Gyllenhaal) and his team visit Okja and declares she is the winner. Hee Bong distracts Mija while Johnny and his team take Okja to Seul. When Mija learns what happened to Okja, she goes to Seul to release Okja. However, their truck is intercepted by a group called Animal Liberation Front led by the environmentalist Jay (Paul Dano). After havoc in the stores in the subway, they rescue and flee with Okja. Jay explains to Mija that Okja is their only chance to film inside Mirando’s research plant that produces GM (genetically modified) pigs, but he says that Okja will only go to New York if Mija accepts. K (Steven Yeun), who is translating Mija and Jay, lies to him and says that Mija accepted that Okja goes to New York, when she said that she wanted to go to the mountains with Okja. Now they are travelling to NYC, expecting to disclose Lucy Mirando to the world. But the task will not be that simple. “Okja” (2017) is a beautiful tale of friendship by Bong Joon Ho with many ecological messages. The lead story is about the friendship of the Korean girl Mija and her super pig Okja. The plot denounces the manipulation of industries in the production of genetically modified supplies luring the public in general. It also shows how animals are treated in slaughterhouses around the world. The fights and betrayals inside corporations are also disclosed. The special effects are top-notch, and the plot is good. My vote is seven. Yes, they revealed the truth but they could have done more. It was bad on so many levels. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/14/25 Full Review Lochlan W Most moving film I've seen in a while. I don't understand how people could see this and continue to eat animals. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/27/25 Full Review Ben E Bad on so many levels. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/22/25 Full Review Nick R It has a lot to say about corporate greed and pro-animal liberation, but the story and acting are very strong here.
