      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Predictable and stodgy, Oliver & Company isn't one of Disney's best, though its colorful cast of characters may be enough to entertain young viewers looking for a little adventure.

Jarrod F Oliver and Company is not very good cause it's boring and dull but it has cute moments. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/15/24 Full Review Trafalgar L Disney's attempt to adapt "Oliver Twist" ends up with a very predictable storyline. The characters except for Dodger and Georgette are very forgettable and the climax is way too intense for its target audience. Were they trying to emulate the emotional intensity of "The Rescuers?" Because, it didn't work. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/12/24 Full Review Holly S não lembro, mas lembro que gostei akakaka Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/26/23 Full Review Mariana R es la segunda película de secuestro infantil que veo de Disney el día de hoy Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/16/23 Full Review Audience Member 35 years old Believe it or not this film actually saved Disney animation thanks to George Scribner They were facing a rut when the movies during the 1970s and 1980s weren't making the money they should The animation wasn't also top notch quality With this one the creators did a twist so to speak by inserting talking animals adapting the English tale of Oliver Twist The story focuses on a young orange kitten in New York City; others have been adopted and he's forced to live on the street Then the kitten meets a mutt named Dodger who shows him the ropes of how to survive After chasing him around the city he comes across Dodger's other associate canines and their master Fagin Fagin is in a bind since he borrowed money from a loan shark and he only has 3 days to collect Dodger and the others have to come up with the money; but the kitten gets swept by by a wealthy little girl named Jenny and her butler Winston Jenny adopts him calling him Oliver Oliver meets their current dog, Georgette who's not too happy sharing room with the kitten Dodger and the others 'rescue' him but Oliver wants to go back Fagin then gets the idea to hold the kitten for ransom hoping the money can come to him Still absolutely one of my favorites from Walt Disney even though I didn’t watch it until after listening to the cassette tape storyteller Brings back so many memories despite being only 77 min long And one of my favorite soundtracks mainly around the Why Should I Worry song that'll get stuck in your head for weeks Other numbers include artists like Huey Lewis, Bette Midler, Sheena Easton, and Billy Joel The music by J.A.C. Redford is very good too using jazz and traditional percussions but also pop The backgrounds are pretty good being sketchy really capturing the gritty, crowded dirty parts of the Big Apple but also capturing the attitude with character Some good voice actors from the late Dom Deluise, Cheech Marin, and Robert Loggia The climax is really exciting too leading to a nice chase with the villain Sykes This was the last film before the Disney Renaissance took shape which pretty much revived the studio after so many lackluster films 'Land Before Time' was released the same time but ultimate had way more success since it was non-Disney reaching bigger lessons and having heavier moments leaving a bigger impact Still Oliver & Company made $53 million gaining a cult following over time so it wasn't a failure after all Again like 'We're Back' this is a very simple watch but not too deep or complicated either Nothing grand but easy to digest Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/26/23 Full Review Tabitha B The first movie I ever saw in the theater. Really enjoyable, great songs. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/11/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Robert Garrett Boston Globe Aug 23, 2022 Full Review Beth Dunlop Miami Herald An instant children’s classic, along the lines of Lady and the Tramp and 101 Dalmatians. It’s heartwarming and entertaining, a thorough pleasure, even for very young children. Rated: 4/4 Aug 23, 2022 Full Review Charles Solomon Los Angeles Times The cartoon action will delight young children, while older ones, who usually reject animation as "kid stuff," will enjoy the rock songs and hip characters, especially the brash Tito. Mar 27, 2019 Full Review Carson Timar ButteredPopcorn Oliver & Company is so concerned with creating a sense of energy that it loses focus on the fundamentals of what makes an enjoyable viewing experience. Dec 24, 2023 Full Review Jack Garner Gannett News Service The film's combination of a humorous script, fast pace, clever gags, superb casting of well-known voices and entertaining musical score make Oliver & Company the most enjoyable Disney film of the modern era for viewers of any age. Rated: 10/10 Aug 23, 2022 Full Review Scott Ross News & Observer (Raleigh, NC) The Disney effort pulses with the beat of its urban setting. It moves briskly, stops now and again for an atmospheric interlude, then roars on with electric syncopation. Rated: 3/4 Aug 23, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews
