Wealthy and white, the Appletrees are secure in their station in 1950s Georgia. Mrs. Appletree (Joan Plowright) is the paragon of Southern womanhood, while her son Albert (John M. Jackson) owns a prosperous lumberyard. Others are less fortunate. The civil rights movement may be afoot, but little change can be felt in lives of the Appletrees' black workers. But old values are challenged when Mrs. Appletree befriends one of her laborer's sons, Jimmy (Norman D. Golden II).
