Audience Member I enjoyed the voyeuristic shots of the band backstage and making media appearances they obviously couldn't care less about. They also contrast nicely with the laddish naivety of the Swim Deep dressing room. The fictional characters and their back stories seemed unnecessary and awkward, but did make me curious as to how Winterbottom sold the concept, did he say to the bands we're going to have actors in here occasionally throwing scripted lines at you and I want you to respond naturally? In any case, the real people do well at nonchalantly interacting with them when the two worlds do collide Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Larushka Ivan-Zadeh Metro Newspaper (UK) Occasionally a delightfully intimate filmic device, it soon wears thin and will frustrate Wolf Alice fans since the band mainly waft about in the background. Rated: 3/5 Oct 11, 2017 Full Review Simran Hans Observer (UK) The love story pads out the running time to a baggy two hours; fans of the band might prefer to see them On the Stage instead. Rated: 3/5 Oct 8, 2017 Full Review Gail Tolley Time Out This isn't a story of rock 'n' roll bad behaviour or larger than life characters, and in some ways that's refreshing. Rated: 3/5 Oct 6, 2017 Full Review Olly Richards NME (New Musical Express) The film stops being about the band and becomes about what their work means. Not all Winterbottom's experiments pay off, but this one absolutely does. Apr 23, 2021 Full Review Rich Cline Shadows on the Wall The film is unlikely to appeal to the band's fans... and there isn't enough of a story to keep non-fans involved. Rated: 2/5 Feb 22, 2019 Full Review Terry Staunton Radio Times The dramatic elements seem awkwardly soldered on to the narrative, as if the director couldn't make up his mind what sort of film to make, and opted to have his cake and eat it, without ever really savouring either experience.
