What to Know

Critics Consensus

John Malkovich is clearly having a ball playing a nefarious pop musician in Opus, but unfortunately the rest of this thriller is too conceptually confused for the star's fun to prove infectious.

Clarisse Loughrey Independent (UK) It has the “salient themes”: celebrity worship, the media, the rise in cult-like behaviours. But this is all superficial stuff. There’s not much about Opus, really, that fully convinces. Rated: 2/5 Mar 15, 2025 Full Review William Bibbiani TheWrap 'Opus' is a Cheeto without the Cheeto dust, so of course we feel cheeted. Mar 14, 2025 Full Review Katie Walsh Tribune News Service The film seems like it’s trying to solve a mathematical formula for zeitgeist-grasping success, but in this empty, hollow provocation, nothing adds up. Rated: 1.5/4 Mar 14, 2025 Full Review Dennis Schwartz Dennis Schwartz Movie Reviews Its attempt to skewer celebrity cultists goes nowhere. Rated: C+ Mar 16, 2025 Full Review Amelia Harvey Frame Rated Opus frustratingly misses its biggest opportunities. A film about a group of culture commentators invited to a reclusive pop star’s compound should have been much more interesting than what is on offer here. Rated: 3/5 Mar 16, 2025 Full Review Sarah Ksiazek The MacGuffin Opus is a word with a more significant meaning—one that reverberates with the film’s characters and somewhat cockily could describe the film itself to its writer and director, Mark Anthony Green, who also refers to himself as MAG. Tammie P I was good but in a weird and crazy way. I liked the main character, and glad that she was the least gullible of all the other people who chose not to acknowledge the creepiness until it was too late. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/16/25 Full Review Reyna Fun watch and the lore built makes it hard to look away! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/16/25 Full Review Vegas V A film that has a redone theme and a slightly altered plot that has been seen before in recent movies. John Malkovich plays the psychotic leader of a cult. It becomes a bit tedious but holds your attention. I was not impressed by it. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/16/25 Full Review MarkNYC64 Cub reporter Ariel Ecton (Ayo Edebiri, fantastic) is among a select few invited to the compound of reclusive musical genius Moretti (a bonkers yet perfect John Malkovich) to listen to his first album in three decades. Also invited are Ariel's boss Stan (Murray Bartlett, douchey), talk show host Clara Armstrong (a batty Juliet Lewis) along with an influencer, a noted celeb photographer, and a podcaster. When the sextet arrives, they are surrounded by residents of the compound all clad in blue and quite subservient to Moretti and his whims, wishes and desires. Yeah, it is creepy, and guess what? Things get out of hand. A commentary on celebrity, celebrity journalism, group think, hero worship, as well as a seemingly blatant jab at Scientology, Opus is one of the most original movies I have seen in ages. Malkovich excels in playing an oddball ridiculously full of himself and, weirdly enough, the songs Moretti performs (by Nile Rogers and The-Dream) are surprisingly .... good. And they're much better than anything in Emilia Perez! The only hollow note --as bad as I hate to say this -- is Tony Hale as Moretti's over the top publicist. We all love Hale's work in Arrested Development and Veep but this was a misfire from the fright wig to the weird, intense stare and oddball manner of speaking. It seemed more appropriate for an SNL sketch than a major motion picture. Offputting, indeed. Overall, the movie is very compelling and somewhat frightening because we've all seen how easily dimwits will fall for a load of bull and create havoc for the sake of one man. Too close for comfort. B Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/16/25 Full Review Cynthia WEIRD ASS MOVIE !!!!! What did i even watch . I’m scarred Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/16/25 Full Review Mars Ayo killed. I enjoyed this generally, but wasnt amazed. Sort of an empty concept. The whole cult thing was very boringly done if Im being honest. Nothing special to it unfortunately. Film looked amazing, and the music? Suprisingly fire. Might need that soundtrack on vinyl Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/16/25 Full Review Read all reviews
