I his movie. It's a great coming of age story. Smart and funny and I feel I could have related to this character, were I sitll teenager and in fact, as a writer, I still can.

Not gonna lie, this almost feels like a parody of cliché raunchy dudebro comedies and California surfer bro culture of the early 2000’s. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it feels like they play the most frustrating tropes of the era straight, like the forced 2nd act breakup, the main character getting shamed for being justly pissed off at everyone who caused all the conflict to start with cause “family over everything”, and the main character rejecting his great opportunity that he fought so hard to get the entire movie just cause “what he thought was special he had all along” cliché. That being said, the casting is solid and the humor was pretty decent, albeit a bit hit-or-miss. Not exactly a great movie, but certainly an entertaining time capsule of the early 2000's surfer bro and raunchy comedy cultures of the era.

I think this story can relate to us all. Everyone has had a moment in their lives that influenced who they have become. We all have friends and family in our lives that are just a bit dysfunctional. This is a story about. A young man finding who he is in a much funnier enjoyable way than anything you can read in catcher in the rye.
