What to Know

Critics Consensus

An uncommonly ambitious animated film, Orion and the Dark benefits from a Charlie Kaufman screenplay that isn't afraid to tangle with existential ideas.

Radheyan Simonpillai CTV's Your Morning Turns into the Being John Malkovich of kids movies. Not saying it works. But I was certainly having more fun watching this unfold while my kids turned to me multiple times being like, “what is this??!!” Feb 9, 2024 Full Review Kristy Puchko Mashable Whether you have a kid in your life who could use some catharsis or an inner child in need of a lullaby, check out the chaotic yet comforting Orion and the Dark. Alden A As the movie progresses, the plot becomes more and more random with the story becoming more and more incomprehensible. For some reason they had to write in the main character’s daughter in when he was young which makes it even stranger. There was also pretty bad acting. I have no idea why the critics gave this a 92% for something like this. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/21/25 Full Review Vicenzo C Orion and the Dark is an interesting take on the night sky while giving us an unrelatable character that somehow sticks. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/21/25 Full Review Andrew T "Orion and the Dark", Netflix and DreamWorks' first collaboration, succeeds in part thanks to its thought-provoking story all about overcoming our fears, fast pace, solid acting (particularly Jacob Tremblay, Paul Walter Hauser, and Angela Bassett), witty humor, stylized animation, and touching musical score. It's a shame it did not come out in theaters, as the animation looked like it deserved better. With all that in mind, the one thing that makes it work less is the ending where we see Hypatia and her son together. It would have made more sense if the movie ended with Orion telling the story to a younger Hypatia. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/21/25 Full Review TROY S Orion and the Dark is a surprisingly heavy and layered animated film until you see who has a screenplay credit and then it all makes sense. What starts off as a film about how every aspect of life can be scary quickly morphs into something that celebrates the unpredictability of it whilst exploring how balance is essential. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/14/25 Full Review Carlos Samuel E Me pareció una excelente película Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/02/25 Full Review matthias s *Orion and the Dark* surprised me in the best way possible. As someone who grew up with plenty of fears, the story hit close to home. It’s a beautiful, heartfelt tale about facing the things that scare you, wrapped in stunning, colorful animation. Dark’s design is fantastic—big, quirky, and oddly comforting—and the voice work brings him to life perfectly. The dual storytelling—Orion recounting his own adventures as a bedtime story to his daughter—is such a clever touch, adding warmth and layers to the film. The bond between them is sweet and relatable, making it a story for all ages. That said, it does feel like the story shines brighter as a book. While the existential themes work better than expected, the first act steals the show, and the rest doesn’t quite keep up. Still, it’s charming, unique, and way more fun than I thought it’d be.
