What to Know

Critics Consensus

An uncommonly ambitious animated film, Orion and the Dark benefits from a Charlie Kaufman screenplay that isn't afraid to tangle with existential ideas.

matthias s *Orion and the Dark* surprised me in the best way possible. As someone who grew up with plenty of fears, the story hit close to home. It’s a beautiful, heartfelt tale about facing the things that scare you, wrapped in stunning, colorful animation. Dark’s design is fantastic—big, quirky, and oddly comforting—and the voice work brings him to life perfectly. The dual storytelling—Orion recounting his own adventures as a bedtime story to his daughter—is such a clever touch, adding warmth and layers to the film. The bond between them is sweet and relatable, making it a story for all ages. That said, it does feel like the story shines brighter as a book. While the existential themes work better than expected, the first act steals the show, and the rest doesn’t quite keep up. Still, it’s charming, unique, and way more fun than I thought it’d be. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/11/25 Full Review Caiden C This movie is so good they should make a series based on it. When they do it should be about Orion, Hypatia (Orion’s Daughter in the future), The Night Entities, and of course the Dark will travel around the world trying help other kids with fear and anxiety. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/04/25 Full Review Matt Y Who is giving this movie a 92% 💀. Yes this movie starts off pretty good and yes I dig the designs of the night time entities (despite them being a bit Inside Out like). My main problem comes when we realize that this story is completely made up by Orion when he is telling his daughter in the future which removes all excitement for the movie because there's no real character development. And don't get me started on the third act, that was atrocious and extremely disappointing for a DreamWorks movie, it was like letting a 5 year old taking control of the script so they could work on uh Megamind 2 or something. Wasted potential, disappointing, yet beautiful movie (4.5/10 - Mid) Rated 2 out of 5 stars 12/31/24 Full Review Vicho V Is a good movie in this year Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/07/24 Full Review Audience Member Seven out of Ten Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/28/24 Full Review Audience Member I watched story of a story of a story Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/04/24 Full Review Read all reviews
