Audience Member The story revolves around two young manga artists who meet and fall in love. The first, Aoki Mon (Matsuda Ryuhei), creates manga by painting on stones. Not surprisingly, Mon's work fails to sell, and everybody encourages him to produce something more conventional. However, Mon is determined not to give up his dream of having his artwork recognised. The second is Akashi Koino (Sakai Wakana), who escapes the drudgery of her life as an office lady by drawing manga and dressing up as her favourite characters. Of course, in the best traditions of romantic manga, the two overcome the obstacles in their path in order to be together. The director, Matsuo Suzuki, also appears in the film as Marimodo, a cynical ex-manga artist who now runs a manga cafe. Matsuo has created a quirky and enjoyable film. Many of the sequences are shot in the style of a manga comic strip with characters occasionally doing seemingly impossible things. No doubt the film also contains many references to popular manga, but the comedy is still accesible enough for non-devotees such as myself to appreciate.
