Audience Member I suspect this was a much better novel than movie. Nothing really happens over the course of 1 1/2 hours except a boy abandoned after his mother's death is claimed by his "father" but learns that in reality his father is a paraplegic, because of a gay lover's quarrel over a boxer who loved neither of them. David Speck, as the boy sustains some interest. But the star of the film is April Turner as the young black servant who befriends Joel, and is the sole optimistic voice on the plantation. When she tries to leave to see snow, she is violently raped by two white boys. The most interesting thing about Other Voices, Other Rooms is that it is written by Truman Capote and is allegedly semi-autobiographical. This portrayal of Capote's life in the South can be contrasted with Dill in "To Kill a Mockingbird" who was also based on Truman Capote. Certainly the characters of Joel and Dill are similar, as is the underlying theme of brutalization of Blacks in the South in the period when Capote was growing up Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Really really horrible acting and some bad flashbacks. Not nearly as interesting as the book... It is shot well enough however, and the dialogue is good enough to just about keep it afloat.
