Shelbyville's biggest claim to fame is that movie star Sondra Locke was born there. So it's no surprise that her rumored return in 1978, for the opening of her new movie, is waking up the sleepy Tennessee town. Locke's homecoming provides some much-needed distraction for teenager Clancy Whitfield (Jason Ritter), whose family is falling apart, and his friends Melora (Hilarie Burton) and Ray (Derek Carter). Together they decide to form a singing group to impress Locke and find their own fame.

David Nusair Reel Film Reviews The familiarity of Our Very Own's thin premise is generally offset by the pervadingly easy-going atmosphere... Audience Member This is one of those movies that comes around every so often. I have seen this type of move dozens of times. A writer/director gets to recreate their teen years as a nostalgia movie. These movies are almost always very nice to look at and mildly interesting to everyone else who isn't the writer/director. Usually the director/writer's tender touch in looking at his/her past is enough to compensate for the basic banality of this movies. Banality is OK. Life is banal. And here that tender touch is what kept me watching knowing that I likely wouldn't care what happened to any of the characters. The movie opens with a dog riding on the roof of Ford Pinto. This movie while good feels a little too lightweight. The Pinto with dog on the roof drives though a few scenes as the movie progresses, but never with any context, hinting at added layers that could have been. If you want to spend a little time in a small town in Tennessee in 1978, this movie is a good way to do that. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Audience Member good drama all star cast Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member it seemed like a pointless movie to me, it just seemed like a movie someone made for absolutely no reason at all. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member I thought I'd really like this, but I was disappointed. It was slow, and didn't seem to have much of a purpose. I get that it was supposed to be the smart, cyclical type movie, with a real day-to-day in small town life feel to it.. and it hits its mark on occasion, but was only OK overall. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Audience Member so. so. sew buttons on ice cream if your bored in a small town with nothing to do... ...eh? nice cast. nice script. nice musical number. if you remember the 70's (@@,)b Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Audience Member I love small towns, and I absolutely love small town movies. This movie has so much to offer. The acting is spot on through all of it. I mean, seriously, I pretty much live in Shelbyville, and people act just like this. ;) The story is so heart-felt, makes you cheer and cry; the music is so fitting, and just an overall excellent movie.
