This documentary traces the creative lives of five women artists from various cultures and backgrounds who have been drawn to live, work and create in New York City. Although these artists work in different media, each woman's art is a spiritual, creative and sometimes rebellious response to the cultural forces of puritanism, poverty, war, social inequality and sexual stereotypes. Over a period of two years, these women each face personal struggles and artistic triumphs.
