What to Know

Critics Consensus

Our Kind of Traitor relies on solid writing and acting rather than action to deliver its spy-movie thrills -- and thankfully has the pedigree to pull it off on both fronts.

Stephen Romei The Australian It's an intriguing character study embedded in a spy thriller. Rated: 3/5 Jul 15, 2016 Full Review Peter Rainer Christian Science Monitor It's all far-fetched in a way that only international spy thrillers -- bless their hearts -- can be. Rated: B- Jul 1, 2016 Full Review Kimber Myers The Playlist Doesn't have quite the depth or the pedigree of other cinematic versions of his novels...but it's still worth the trip. Rated: B Jul 1, 2016 Full Review David Nusair Reel Film Reviews ...a decidedly oddball premise that’s employed to decent-enough effect... Rated: 2.5/4 Jun 18, 2024 Full Review Josh Slater-Williams Vague Visages A solidly constructed sophomore feature from director Susanna White, Our Kind of Traitor is a tight thriller that, while rarely excelling to any sort of transcendent heights, never really steps a foot wrong. Nov 13, 2023 Full Review Richard Crouse Richard Crouse By default Our Kind of Traitor will probably be listed under the "thriller" section on Netflix and elsewhere simply because it was written by spymaster John le Carré but don't be fooled. Georgan G Great actors in an plot that made no sense. Why an educated man would begin interacting with this clearly criminal guy, then follow-up by nearly getting himself & wife killed is ridiculous. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 12/15/24 Full Review Hackney G Important story, that gets to the heart of the corruption in the UK around 'blood money' so great potential and the book may be great, but ultimately thsi film is pretty flat. It started off well, Stellan Skarsgård as Dima provides a great OTT character, but Ewan McGregor's and Naomie Harris's Perry and Gail just pretty one-dimensional and tbh that plot line is fairly unbelievable. I was enjoying it initially but simply got bored after about an hour. Damien Lewis's Hector was great as was Mark Gatiss as always. Conclusion: wasted opportunity as McGregor's character was very weak. Also the women get a pretty poor deal here. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/06/24 Full Review Liam K Disappointing to see some good actors cast in such a poor movie... Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/21/24 Full Review William F Good and gripping spy thriller involving Russian mafia money and the City (and institutions) of London. Maybe a little unrealistic that the totally 'innocent' couple commit themselves to helping the mafia boss because he seems - somehow - like a good guy. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/28/24 Full Review Peter G As is the case with John Le Carre books the better films made from his work encourage the viewer to pay close attention to the often convoluted plots with their multiple twists & betrayals between some of the characters. This film rewards some attention to detail regarding the plot concerning Russian money laundering involved in setting up a bank in Britain & one mafia character's attempt to defect with his family by revealing the illegal machinations between Russian Oligarchs & some members of the British government in setting up the bank. Some criticism of the film attempted to point out the absence of excitement in the treatment but I found the story held my attention & interest. Not having read Le Carre‘s book I have no comparison to make but found that the scenario was presented pretty clearly on one viewing & that Susanna White‘s direction kept the film's pace effectively. Good performances particularly from Stellan Skarsgard as the mafia man who wants to make a deal in return for he & his families safe immigration to Britain. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/17/23 Full Review Ted B 3.5 Stars; No car chases, no outnumbered martial arts fight with enemy agents, no outnumbered gun fights with enemy agents, no double/triple cross from High-ups in the agency changing the 'good' guy to being the 'bad' guy, no bedding down every pretty woman in the movie, etc. In other words, none of those same old Spy Movie cliches. Just a realistic intrigue plot in which an innocent college professor gets roped into helping a Russian mafia type. He is simply asked to deliver a message to the British MI-6. However, internal MI-6 politics makes that mission very complicated. He is now caught in the middle trying to help both sides. The acting in all cases was good enough to make the characters seem real which added to the 'Buy-in Factor' for the movie. In other words, realistic actors in a realistic plot of intrigue set up the tension and thrills in this film. In other words, this entertaining film was "Our Kind of Spy Movie".
