Very powerful and uncompromising movie shot on location. It came years before German 'mountain' films and in the Swedish early tradition heavily used exterior shots, an early film on man vs nature theme. Sjostrom is a true genius having heavily influenced the early cinema. His films make an indelible impression, thematically heavy, technically beautiful. I believe the famous Swedish brooding style commenced with his auteur vision and handling of such themes as love, sacrifice, death and dignity. In this movie we see a young couple on the run from the law as they settle in the mountains, give birth to a baby and deal with the harshness of life. They experience all kinds of tribulations: they are subjected to natural disasters and human envy and cruelty. It's an amazing early movie with particularly stark and impressive ending. Geniuses always knew that happy endings have no place in true pieces of art.

Centers on an unknown drifter, Kari (Victor Sjöström) looking for work and ends up working at a farm owned by Halla (Edith Erastoff). And as they begin to fall in love, it is then his past begins to catch up with him that his name is not Kari but is really Eyvind suspected of escaping from prison.

The Outlaw and His Wife is one of the best films of the 1910s thanks to Victor Sjostrom's great dual role as a director and actor, a strong story and characterization, many memorable and striking scenes and of course fantastic cinematography with gorgeous mountain imagery.
