Phil Hoad Guardian A sturdy psychological drama with a horror chaser in which the immersion in the great outdoors is the problem, not the solution. Rated: 3/5 Sep 4, 2023 Full Review Brian Tallerico RogerEbert.com A film that’s too choppy and ridiculous for too long for its gut-punch of a final act to really connect. Rated: 2/4 May 19, 2023 Full Review Terry Sherwood Film Threat Unsettling in its resolution and brutal in its intent, Outpost gives a nuanced account of the effects that trauma can have. Rated: 8/10 Nov 29, 2023 Full Review David Griffiths Subculture Entertainment While the fact that it goes in a different direction to what expected is a welcome surprise you are always feeling like it could have gone further. Rated: 2.5/5 Sep 19, 2023 Full Review Rich Cross Starburst Outpost is a great-looking film. Rated: 3/5 Sep 13, 2023 Full Review Lisa Nystrom FILMINK (Australia) Torn between providing an honest commentary on the survival of trauma, and diving headfirst into gore and schlock horror, the film succeeds at doing neither. Roro Truly a good horror film. Great acting, directing, sound, and screenplay. Good to see an original and good horror film at the movie theater. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/20/23 Full Review Kevin D I watched this movie on Amazon Video as background noise while working on something else. I almost turned it off because the main character was so useless in the first act. Around the middle of the movie, I thought a change would happen and predicted one ending, thus making it good background noise. However, the movie took a sharp turn in a completely different direction. Unfortunately, the stark contrast did not work. Instead of a natural or logical progression, it felt more like a completely different movie without the preamble or setup, which took away from the impact of the third act. Meh. A little more background on the main character that would explain the end would have saved this movie. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 10/30/23 Full Review Garvis W had high hopes in the first half but then it kind of sucked after that Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 09/22/23 Full Review Peter W Overall, there's a lot to admire here in the directorial debut from Joe Lo Truglio. The actor has set out on a new challenge unlike anything he's done before in his incredible career. His passion and excitement are apparent, as is the inspiration from other classic horror titles such as The Shining. The film's setting, location and premise are a delight, and viewers will be enticed by the mysterious elements to invest in seeing how the story plays out for the lead, played by Beth Dover. The third act is filled with energy, fun, and, most notably for a horror film, blood. While the storyline line is fun and mysterious, the core reveals are predictable, and there are some reveals for the side characters that I found to be slightly unclear to me upon first viewing. Nevertheless, fans of all things Joe Lo Trugliowill be left feeling content and proud of his achievements and eager to see what's next for him in the horror genre. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/31/23 Full Review Valerie H Awesome Indie horror. It's a super satisfying slow burn, with great performances. A really fun movie to watch. You know you're getting into a scary situation, but the depth, and causes may not be what you're expecting. Beth Dover gives a really strong performance, and there's a great supporting cast. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/10/23 Full Review John-Scott H A worthy homage to The Shining. If you like phenomenal scenery, good soundtracks, compelling female leads, and just the right amount of levity, you will enjoy this film. LoTruglio is clearly a student of the medium and has his own voice as a director. Looking forward to see what he does next.
