Leonard Maltin leonardmaltin.com Some reviewers have criticized the film for being too Disney-esque. I'm not sure why that's a bad thing--but I'll grant you that the movie feels comfortably familiar. Nov 10, 2020 Full Review Mark Kennedy Associated Press The acclaimed animator behind such powerful figures as Ariel, Aladdin, Tarzan and Rapunzel has a new heroine and she's going further than any of his creations - the moon. Rated: 3/4 Oct 30, 2020 Full Review Tasha Robinson Polygon Over the Moon's emotional journey is solid and well-expressed. Again, it draws on calculated iconography... But Fei Fei's emotional journey is a universal story about feeling pain and learning to move on. Oct 26, 2020 Full Review Nuha Hassan Nuha Hassan (Medium) It is a universal story of loss and grief that everyone is familiar with, the importance of finding new love, and accepting loss. It is undoubtedly beautiful and emotionally driven. Jul 20, 2023 Full Review Zoë Rose Bryant Loud and Clear Reviews Over the Moon spectacularly shines a light on Chinese culture with its arresting animation, touching themes, and stellar soundtrack. Rated: 4/5 Sep 1, 2022 Full Review Victoria Luxford City AM Once you've finished tapping your feet to the pop-infused musical numbers, you'll struggle to remember what happened. Aluna U Over The Moon is a beautifully animated musical that blends Chinese mythology with modern themes, focusing on a young girl’s journey through grief and healing after her mother’s death. While the film creatively reimagines the legend of Chang’e, it leaves some story elements unresolved, especially regarding the true version of the myth. With vibrant visuals, emotional songs, and a heartfelt message, the film resonates deeply with viewers learning to accept loss and move forward. It starts out strong, with an interesting premise and full of Chinese culture and mythology. However, as the movie progresses it starts to lose any cultural aspects and focuses instead on creating as many colorful, showy blobs for little kids to "ooo" and "aaah" at as it can. The jokes aren't funny. The plot is cliche. It also had a message that was so infuriating that I wanted to turn it off halfway through. **Slight Spoiler** The theme of the movie is about moving on from loved ones that are dead/gone. It did NOT do a good job of handling this complicated topic and honestly, the movie gave me no reason not to think that the dad is wrong for even wanting to move on at all. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 09/20/25 Full Review Katie R This looked much better when I was younger. I then realized as I grew up that Fei Fei is nothing but an obnoxious and cynical narcissist, only caring about her goal which is proving that Chang’e is real. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/20/25 Full Review Audience Member An unexpected yet powerful story about love and loss. It was put on in the background as we did other things around the houses and it very quickly became the focal point for the next 2hrs. (6.3/10 - Good) Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/29/24 Full Review Audience Member dang, this made me cry. While I think it goes rather fast, it manages to squeeze in A lot of learning experiences for the main character that don't feel forced. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/11/24 Full Review Read all reviews
