Oxygen’s relevance strikes like lightning in a year when time is measured less by Earth’s tilt and more by first wave, second wave, red phase, yellow phase; not by time passing daily, but by how much danger remains in the room. Go to Full Review

Starring a superb Mélanie Laurent, Alexandre Aja’s Oxygen is both a claustrophobic survival thriller and an introspective drama about memory, identity, and the ethics of scientific advancement. Go to Full Review

Oxygen is a phenomenal example of one-location filmmaking done right. Brutal moral dilemmas, surprising discoveries about the mysterious protagonist, and a fantastic one-woman show from Mélanie Laurent keep the slow, flashback-heavy narrative engrossing. Go to Full Review

Ibrar T @RT68950663 1d This is why movie concepts truly are the best thing ever!!! This is for everyone, a movie that has manufactured this truly immersive experience. The concept is genius and at times makes you feel alone and isolated; emotions will always get you. The conceptual writing and paradigm produced here is the best I’ve seen in a huge-long time. See more Kyle F @RT01258796 2d One of the gems of sci-fi, an incredible film that makes you question your own survival instincts, a film that shows what love can drive us humans to do in the face of adversity. despite only watching from inside a box with the main character ‘Liz’ the film creates an interesting story and atmosphere, creating a great care and want to see our protagonist survive. A must watch for anyone who loves films. 6 * if I could give it. In all my years of watching movies this will be an all time favourite of mine in years to come and I would happily visit again. See more Par H @Parhwy Jul 14 Oxygen (2021) is a 101-minute-long French drama I saw on Netflix in July 2026. I felt that this is a thriller with subtle horror elements (well, not so subtle if you let the constant claustrophobia and occasional musophobia and trypanophobia get to you). Suspense, hope, failed hope, tension, anxiety are all present. For the main character and the viewer, we are experiencing a closed-box puzzle with clues. Some I got, some I did not. We get flashbacks, we get visions and hallucinations. Given how tiny this film’s stage is, it’s a feat that it kept my attention. The broader story is less believable yet interesting nonetheless. Again, given the film’s tiny stage, Melanie Laurent draws deeply although M.I.L.O.’s actor, Mathieu Amalric, is perfect. Rewatch? Maybe. Recommend? Yes. 7/10. See more Priya C. @Sci-FiTrekkie May 3 Mélanie Laurent does a phenomenal job in Oxygen. It’s such a well made sci-fi film. I wasn’t sure what direction the film would go in and it was interesting seeing the mystery unfold. See more Ted F @RT88466953 Apr 7 A potentially good film spoiled by bad science and an insufferable protagonist. Melanie does everything that the script asks, unfortunately the script calls for a bipolar protagonist who cannot perform basic logical analysis, but we find out she is a brilliant scientist. We have an arbitrary clock to add artificial tension even though we know the countdown will finish at the end of the film. (Which my partner hated) As the film runs our protagonist spends more and more time on wistful memories rather than concentrating on the task at hand. I could not find a thing in common with the character and so found myself rooting for the antagonist, just to end my suffering. The plot is pretty unoriginal, derivative of a number of other similar films. If also feels overly long, especially when I figured out a number of the plot twists early on. TL:DR Potentially good plot spoiled by poor script writing, best avoid unless you like annoying protagonists who make bizarre decisions and cannot logic See more Marco L @decatur555 Feb 24 Oxygen is a tightly constructed sci-fi thriller that turns extreme confinement into sustained tension. Alexandre Aja proves he can generate urgency without relying on spectacle, using precise camera work and sound design to make a single location feel dynamic and oppressive. Mélanie Laurent carries almost the entire film with a performance that balances vulnerability and resilience, keeping the emotional stakes grounded even as the mystery unfolds. While the impact softens slightly once answers begin to surface, the film never loses control of its pacing. It doesn’t reinvent the genre, but it delivers intelligent, claustrophobic entertainment that remains gripping from start to finish. See more Read all reviews
