Don’t get me wrong, if you’re here mainly to watch robots faceoff against monsters, you’ll likely leave fairly satisfied. Pacific Rim Uprising disappointingly settles for simply being passable.

This movie did not work for me would not recommend if you haven't seen the first one. The Cgi was good. The action scenes worked. The battles where fun and exactly what you came to the movie for. But The humor was all over the place. This movie reminds me of someone trying to recreate their favorite food with low calories and realizing most of the flavor is not there. And its healthy it works but its not making you want to taste it. Two main leads hard pass. This movie and Independence day Resurgence are like sister films. They suffer from the same problem, trying to recreate the magic of an iconic film without understanding what made those movies iconic. The plot makes no sense and they do a disservice to one of the major characters in the first film.

If you enjoyed Pacific Rim and you wanted a sequel that misrepresents the characters, lacks the cool action sequences, and feels like a total nothing-burger, then Pacific Rim: Uprising is the movie for you. John Boyega deserves better.
