Anton Bitel Sight & Sound an allegory of both thinking outside the box and changing the prevalent ecosystem within, Padak is undoubtedly harrowing and may well put younger viewers off eating fish for life Nov 30, 2012 Full Review Read all reviews

Humzah K Absolutely adored this movie to bits. I'll concede I'm about twelve years late to the party, but currently one of my favorite animated movies right now. It's bitter, it's heart-wrenching, it's gory, and its the greyest ending I've ever seen. Thank Saberspark for sending me here! The voice acting is lovely and the music is amazing, especially for what's essentially a butcher-horror film. The dynamic between Old Flounder and Padak herself was something I loved seeing, and the way Nollami (Spotty) found himself in the middle of it all was the most adorable-turned-terrifying thing I've ever seen. Will be thinking about this movie for nights for the next few years! If you haven't already, I'd recommend checking out the trivia on the Nami wiki for the other details on the context of the movie, videos, interviews, cut scenes, all the good stuff! Obviously, with English translation on~ https://namu.wiki/w/%ED%8C%8C%EB%8B%A5%ED%8C%8C%EB%8B%A5 One of my favorite things here was from the director's interview; in that scene where Padak mauls a bunch of clownfish, it was mentioned that the aquarium fish were supposed to be goldfish, but were changed out of frustration that the film was being compared to Finding Nemo during production! Hope you can all fixate on this as much as me! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/19/25 Full Review Audience Member DANG THIS MOVIE IS BRUTAL Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member While Padak/Swimming to Sea reaches level of darkness that left me unable to sleep at night for a few days and I'm not too big on the movie's art style, this disturbing South Korean animated tale deserves credit for not pulling its punches, having sharp social commentary and thought-provoking themes and even having a few poignant musical numbers. Whether or not it's TOO dark is a matter of opinion but, simply put, a Finding Nemo ripoff this ain't. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Audience Member Passes the time well.
