Emily Zemler Observer Painkiller is a highly entertaining, easy watch, which may seem odd to say about a show about how legal drug use has ruined thousands of lives. But if it raises awareness maybe it doesn’t matter how the story is told, as long as it continues to be told. Aug 10, 2023 Full Review Tracy Allen PopHorror.com It's more than a vigilante Death Wish wannabe film. It's an important story that needs to be told, and people need to listen. May 8, 2021 Full Review Michelle Kisner The Movie Sleuth Painkiller is a great throwback style revenge-thriller that tackles the pervasive and deadly prescription drug industry that has infected the most vulnerable among us. May 5, 2021 Full Review Daniel M. Kimmel North Shore Movies A down-and-dirty thriller... It doesn't pretend to be anything more and it gets the job done. Rated: 3/5 May 5, 2021 Full Review Bobby LePire Film Threat Painkiller hammers its message home, which might frustrate some viewers. But, the direction is good, the action exciting, the story interesting, and the score is beyond stellar. Rated: 7.5/10 Apr 30, 2021 Full Review Prairie Miller WBAI Radio Not simply another vigilante revenge thriller, though that too. As combo podcaster prophet of doom and the masked medication avenger in question Bill Oberst navigates a real life tragedy - and that other pandemic of greedy drug corporations as well. HJ T Shameful distortion of facts. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/07/23 Full Review Louis M Inspired editing brings this thrilling docu-drama to life. Masterfully communicating its hard-hitting story and message through interweaving stories and Aduba's stand out performance. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 08/16/23 Full Review BOK B Truly incredible! Great performances. After the distraction of Covid we poignantly return to the earlier (and still existing) disaster of OxyContin and precisely how thousands died right before our eyes. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/16/23 Full Review Jeffery P I think Dopesick did it better. But it was still heart-rending. The performance were excellent. I would have preferred a longer resolution with more details. Doing followup end title cards just doesn't seem to cut it dramatically. Especially when the series flirts with some over the top visuals throughout. I would still recommend it. It's engrossing. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/13/23 Full Review Anne B If you've read some of the great, brave and tragic books about taking down the Sacklers and their role in fueling the drug epidemic, you'll find this movie is a horrible distortion of the facts. Netflix should be banned from using books as a basis for their "movies." Since they don't read the books. Matthew Broderick could have easily played an accurate and fascinating Richard Sackler, the capo de capo. Instead Netflix has him playing fetch with his obnoxious dog. Oh, Netflix, it wasn't the dog's balls that Patrick Radden Keefe wrote about. It was the dog's crapping on the lush purple rug on the top floor of the building. Rather than show the reality, and how cold and indifferent Sackler was, Netflix shows him as a bumbling idiot. See John Oliver's satire of his testimony. So many important facts are missing—the Sacklers' fury at having their names removed from major public institutions. Oh, they forgot Harvard, the Temple of Dendur, the Louvre, but inserted a lengthy dull minority discrimination case? This is what happens when an LA based film company makes a movie about a complex NYC based story. Nan Goldin, demonstrations at the Guggenheim and the Met, all dismissed. Add some sleazy LA style parties. Don't discuss she'll companies and the actual profits Purdue made. Among Netflix's worst ever. The cast of characters is completely distorted and weirdly is led by a rude, unprofessional woman who takes credit for the work of hundreds of other people. My daughter is a prosecutor and I know how hard it is to make an airtight case against some wealthy offenders. This movie is so disrespectful of the hard work and low pay of public prosecutors I wanted to scream. About 1/4 of movie has to do with reality. Even Rated 1 out of 5 stars 08/14/23 Full Review Charles M Would have much rather have had a long documentary and real stories than the way they made it. Stopped watching by the thirdly episode Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 08/13/23 Full Review Read all reviews
