Kimber Myers Los Angeles Times This character-driven thriller gives specificity to small scenes, engaging the audience in each moment. Sep 20, 2018 Full Review Chris Salce Film Threat Painless has a lot of bright spots. The cast and the production were good, and when you add in the graphic novel-like storyline mixed with a classic mad scientist feel, it really all meshed well together... Rated: 7/10 Oct 29, 2018 Full Review Bob Bloom Journal and Courier (Lafayette, IN) 'Painless' is an understated, low-key indie film that explores the psyche of an individual who knows he is different from the vast majority of people and refuses to accept that he cannot be fixed. Steph N Void of an ending. Leaves you with the feeling of spending the time useless. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/30/22 Full Review josh m A cool unique movie about one man's quest to feel. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Bill W There were positive elements to the movie but the way the lead actor portrayed his part was a turn off leading me to rate this 2 stars. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/10/20 Full Review Frances H My feelings about this flick in one word: Meh! Rated 2 out of 5 stars 09/05/19 Full Review Nat R Engaging story. Interesting journey that moves along with a satisfying variety of elements. Most of the progression of the story is explained indirectly through situations, allowing the viewer to figure it out by observation, rather than forcing the characters to make awkward statements people don't make in real life; this gives it a very realistic feel. For instance, when two associates are linked, they don't tell each other how long they've known each other for the sake of informing the audience (a theatrical tool used by writers who can't figure out a way to inform the audience by revelation). Instead, tensions between the two colleagues build, drawing your interest until bits of background info are revealed. This gives the whole film a very close feel to reality - credit to the writers and producers. Overall it is good entertainment for a couple hours. However, the romance doesn't seem like a believable match of personalities. Not because of the lead female actress, Evalena Marie; her character is intrigued and smitten by the protagonist and she delivers on this chemistry. In fact she alone carries the chemistry. But the male character is too withdrawn - I can't tell if he's over-playing the nervous mindset of the character, or if the actor himself is just that nervous with the women in real life. This is credit to his acting abilities, but it makes for a one-sided romance. Be prepared for a totally flaccid let-down in their romance - it's not realistic or satisfying in any way. The only way I can make sense of it is that the film makers ran out of time and had to wrap it up. But other than that, the film is excellent for a low-B story.
