Critics Consensus

Papillon puts its own well-acted, solidly produced spin on a previously adapted tale, although it suffers in comparison to the 1973 version.

Simran Hans Observer (UK) Papi's protracted, chaotically paced setbacks begin to feel less like a test of his resilience than the viewer's. Rated: 2/5 Dec 23, 2018 Full Review Geoffrey Macnab Independent (UK) But whether taken as a study in human resilience, as an oblique love story, or as an indictment of the French penal system, this drama is claustrophobic and oppressive. Rated: 3/5 Dec 21, 2018 Full Review Kevin Maher Times (UK) The deadening narrative structure (escape, capture, escape, capture etc) eventually overwhelms everything else on screen. Rated: 2/5 Dec 21, 2018 Full Review Taylor Baker Drink in the Movies The slapstick and Hollywood set found in the original are swapped out for a more authentic, uncomfortable, and claustrophobic interpretation. Rated: 76/100 Aug 19, 2021 Full Review Jim Rohner Battleship Pretension It's an impressive sequence, but too little too late and shortly thereafter thoroughly undercut by an unearned saccharine conclusion and bad old age makeup. Jim P Papillon the book (and the follow up Banco) are two of my fave ever books. The original movie from 1973 is a 5star classic! But this version..? Meh... Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/30/24 Full Review Kathryn V As far remakes it is one of the better ones I've seen when it comes to movies. Wasted too much screen time in the beginning with the girlfriend and all that. Still nothing like the one with Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffmann. This actor kind of resembles Steve McQueen., don't know who he is really. Rami Malek, I know who.he is, liked his portrayal as Louie. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/26/24 Full Review Dani G Intresting story. At times one starts doubting if he was ever gonna escape. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 07/28/24 Full Review Steve A Really Enjoyed this movie!....Watch it today! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/17/24 Full Review prawnda s it's pretty good, but there are certainly some flaws. the reviews regarding the lack of facial hair growth were pretty accurate, but i disagree with "bad old age makeup". personally, the biggest flaw in this film was how often a variety of characters simply stand around gawking, wasting precious seconds, or loudly dumping exposition to the viewer that doesn't feel natural in it's setting. slow pacing and the sense of deprivation and dread are big elements of the story, but we shouldn't still be seeing slow paced conversations and weirdly stunted body acting from the protagonists during their escape attempts or various schemes. with the number of lead characters that do this, i would have to blame the director instead of the actors. imo they would not have done this across the board if they weren't instructed to do so. there's often a feeling that the cast was told to look like they are sneaking and checking their surroundings, but when they did it in a realistic sense the director didn't feel that it was shoved down the audience's throat enough. the people that survive these ordeals are not the ones that take the time to ensure they are visibly being sneaky or that they look concerned enough while sneaking a glance at various things. the viewer should be able to interpret these things from context, but the director gave us no options to figure it out for ourselves and instead went for a very old-timey, stage like presentation for these sequences. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/02/23 Full Review Benjamin B I remember watching the 1973 Papillon film as a kid and loved it. When I saw this on Netflix I thought "oh no, another remake". I; however, loved it. The performances are good and it gave a new and interesting perspective to the source material. It's a great movie about solidarity and brotherhood. I recommend this film for anyone looking to be pleasantly surprised, as I was. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 05/15/23 Full Review Read all reviews
