Federico T One of the most successful movies by italian maestro Tinto Brass, "Paprika" is the story of the path to awareness of a young girl from Istria who consciously chooses to become a professional prostitute, in a parallel with the fate of italian brothels that, in the period portrayed in the movie (culminating in 1958), were about to be abolished by law. Lifelong interested in treating about the pursuit of freedom, director Tinto Brass (who wrote the story subject and the script with longtime Fellini's and Risi's screenwriter Bernardino Zapponi) focuses that political matter from the point of view of the prostitutes, which here claim the brothel context as their voluntary means of affirmation, not only economic, but also of self expression and personal inclination, because what we like is not wrong by itself and we should be allowed to make a living out of it. From there the bordello transforms in a sisterhood, a safe place to escape from the dangers that concretely could emerge when desire is lived outside of it. Brass depicts the joyous side of sex you don't have to be sorry of, the opulent beauty you don't have to hide, he is one side of the story and certainly the not politically-correct one, but totally radicated in his credo, since this movie is also his mind that retraces his own personal weaning to sex. Visually this movie is for Brass a comeback to the universe portrayed in his 1976's feature film "Salon Kitty" and benefits again of the colourful flamboyant costumes designed by Jost Jakob, which confer this happy cheerful representation of Tinto's view (and memory) about the whorehouses phenomenon. The movie editing has always been the stylistic code of Tinto Brass and here as ever it accompanies swirls, passion ignitions and carefreeness of this girl nicknamed as a spice.
