Richard Brody The New Yorker Encina's film, balanced exquisitely between the concrete and the abstract, between the specific and the absolute, is a quietly devastating indictment of the eternal waste of youth as cannon fodder in this and all wars. Feb 6, 2017 Full Review Joshua Rothkopf Time Out Rated: 2/5 Nov 17, 2011 Full Review Nathan Lee New York Times That Paraguayan Hammock happens to be one of the few features to emerge from Paraguay in recent decades in no way diminishes its rarity. Rated: 4.5/5 May 14, 2008 Full Review Matthew Nestel Boxoffice Magazine The thrust of this film is faint but steady. At times, you are really looking for something in the long-holding shot, and it's just not there. The point? Not to look too hard. Rated: 3.5/5 May 16, 2008 Full Review Robin Clifford Reeling Reviews That such a simple film makes you want the answers [to the questions] tells of the talent of new filmmaker, Paz Encina. Audience Member Esperar desespera... Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Ici ecrasante, la lenteur n'est jamais gage de qualite, et n'est pas une forme d'expression en soi. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Audience Member I'm sure Frasier would have loved a double bill of this and 'Noch ein Stuhl'. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Hey - beautifully strange but mesmerising film all the more powerful for it's stark and melancholic tale of a simple couple waiting for the return of their son from some distant war. The story unfolds slowy, with flashbacks and day-to-day issues interwoven against a subtle atmosphere of rumbling thunder, a barking dog and a fond bickering that only comes from great familiarity. The final exit scene, complete with flickering lamp to indicate their fragile hope, is a great analogy for the final journey and it's a blissful promise of release. Quality film, worth a watch. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Audience Member An old couple sittin' in a hammock, waiting for rain and their son to return? Can do, or so i thought. But, jeez, even I have limits. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Audience Member A peculiar but interesting style, the majority of film is in long shot, and there's probably less than 20 cuts in the whole thing. It's not really about the style though, more a voice over retrospective of coming to terms with the loss of a sun. Very strange, difficult to watch, but it does have something about it.
