What to Know

Critics Consensus

A change of setting breathes some new life into the franchise, but Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones fails to provide enough consistent thrills to justify a fifth film in the series.

Chris Stuckmann ChrisStuckmann.com This film is not scary, it's simply an exercise in waiting for a loud, ear piercing musical cue that forces us to be startled. Rated: D Apr 23, 2015 Full Review Wesley Morris Grantland There's no getting past the nonsense formality of taking that camera everywhere. Jan 17, 2014 Full Review Marc Savlov Austin Chronicle Yeah, this movie's a dog, but you can't blame the producers for strip-mining the same old fool-proof formula to death... and beyond. Rated: 1.5/5 Jan 9, 2014 Full Review Patrick Cavanaugh The Wolfman Cometh Manages to breathe some new life into the redundant franchise while also threading connections to the series' past, though also deviates quite a bit from what made the series so beloved in the first place. Rated: 3/5 Sep 20, 2023 Full Review Richard Crouse Richard Crouse Does a good job of building tension in the last twenty minutes while delivering an ending that brings the series full circle and will tickle fans who have seen all the movies. Audience Member as far we are in the franchise this is no question the best when it comes to the family the ending was interesting i like the main character the most out of the franchise felt bad about these characters it created interesting questions but i know won’t be answered 90% Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/13/24 Full Review Oriana H Jesse is the finest man ive ever seen when he saw oscar defy gravity i cried 👽 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/28/24 Full Review Dan R 2014's 'Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones' is the perfect example of why you shouldn't always believe a film's synopsis. SYNOPSIS: 'When a young man becomes the target of a malevolent entity, he must uncover its true intentions before it takes complete control of him.' As you'll know I'd expressed concern that this film, and further sequels, would move away from the story which had been interwoven into the 'Paranormal Activity' franchise thus so. But I'd no need to worry. The main story here, which does have nothing to do with what we've seen before, drips feeds us Easter eggs of connections to the main franchise story, culminating in the absolute connection thread where we end up at the conclusion of the first film. It's cleverly done, generates a million and one new questions, and puts a new spin on the franchise. As a whole there's some great tension and jump scares, whilst the practical effects really take things to a new level. It's both really impressive and shocking at times. A real evolution for the franchise and grows the story across America, to new characters and communities. I really enjoyed this! 8/10 Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/20/24 Full Review Alec B Finally one of these movies abandons the drab suburban housescapes of the previous entries. The wonderfully insane finale could have easily served as an effective end for these films or at least in regards to this specific story. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/28/24 Full Review Audience Member Finally, a January horror movie that doesn't suck! Even a decade later this is actually good Thank god for that considering I hated the second film so much because of dumb written characters and I skipped that horrid 4th film because of how terribly received it was A nice change of setting is much welcomed here this time focusing on a Latino family in Oxnard, California dealing with ghostly phenomena and the horror of it rooted in Catholicism Director Christopher Landon gets straight to the point waisting no time as a young man Hector starts experiencing interactions with the supernatural; he can communicate with a children's toy, levitate But it slowly dawns on him and his neighbors something is wrong as the presence starts to affect his behavior and change his personality I got some actual frights and laughs at the same time Especially when it came to the ending I forgot how freaking terrifying this was as they explore new territory Heck they even bring back some characters from previous films connecting everything together keeping the series true to its roots The people in here are very likable having genuine reactions thanks to better acting and writing, and you get a sense of the neighborhood they inhabit interacting with their community; and for once there’s justification to why certain moments are being filmed given these are mainly teenage boys reveling in the fun they have The filmmakers take good use of the first person consumer camera perspective with a nice polished look and seamless effects The found footage genre continues to expand thanks to this horror franchise with new players, new ideas, and continuing to deliver the scares while changing up the formula Im very happy this is just as good as the original and makes up for 2 and 4 Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/03/24 Full Review Rebellovw I was surprised - I think I liked it better than some of the previous ones. They are all so much fun. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/15/23 Full Review Read all reviews
