Celebrated filmmaker Ira Sachs (Love is Strange) makes a breathtaking return with PASSAGES, a fresh, honest and brutally funny take on messy, modern relationships, starring Franz Rogowski (Great Freedom), Ben Whishaw (Women Talking) and Adèle Exarchopoulos (Blue Is the Warmest Colour). Set in Paris, this seductive drama tells the story of Tomas (Rogowski) and Martin (Whishaw), a gay couple whose marriage is thrown into crisis when Tomas begins a passionate affair with Agathe (Exarchopoulos), a younger woman he meets after completing his latest film.

Critics Consensus

Elevated by a remarkable Franz Rogowski performance, Passages adds another smart, deeply humanistic film to director/co-writer Ira Sachs' estimable filmography.

Christina Newland iNews.co.uk As the dynamics between these three people change and eventually alter the lives of all involved, Sachs depicts the pain and the pleasure of the messes we make when we blindly follow desire. Rated: 5/5 Sep 18, 2024 Full Review David Rooney The Hollywood Reporter Caustically amusing, sexy, sad and unflinchingly intense, this is an intimate study of the formation and collapse of a romantic triangle, played with an invigorating absence of sentiment by three actors at the top of their game. Dec 13, 2023 Full Review Bilge Ebiri New York Magazine/Vulture Ira Sachs is a master of the small, delicate gestures that wind up having seismic repercussions in our lives. In Passages, which might be his masterpiece, he fashions the most delectably ruinous of love triangles. Dec 9, 2023 Full Review Jaylan Salah InSession Film The scene when Adèle Exarchopoulos sings to him is sensual and beautiful, with a sublime connection to Mia Hansen-Løve’s or Claire Denis’s cinema. Apr 17, 2024 Full Review Amber Wilkinson Eye for Film In the end, whether you - or, for that matter Martin or Agathe - love or hate Tomas or not is irrelevant, Sachs suggests, as he’s the sort whose freewheeling momentum will carry him forward no matter what. Rated: 3/5 Apr 16, 2024 Full Review Kristian M. Lin Fort Worth Weekly I usually admire Sachs’ dramas at a distance, but this one got its hooks in me. Mar 18, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

Seth M A beautifully filmed look at a self destructive man. The film feels simultaneously deeply intimate and distant - a feeling shared by those who love the central figure. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 08/22/23 Full Review Ed So many gay men hide behind pretending to like sex with women. In the South, especially, men, knowing they are gay, marry women to divert suspicion. This film shows the harm that does to both the man and the woman. Moreover, because the man is not able to commit fully to either a male partner or a female one, he ends up losing both -- and rides off on a bicycle into the night. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 08/22/23 Full Review jmg The Acting and story were very good but I found myself not being able to room for any main character Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/20/23 Full Review Scott H Interesting story and well acted. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/19/23 Full Review julie b This was messy and complicated, beautifully shot but also at the same time felt very real. Adele is fabulous as Agathe!!! Tomas’ character is so chaotic and toxic, played very well!! Ben Whishaw is like most of the characters I’ve seen him play (and is still great). Overall, I enjoyed this, but I felt like there was something missing that I can’t exactly put my finger on. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/23/24 Full Review David F This talky, European film is about some pretty miserable people bed-hoping and such. It didn’t really do much for me.
