Panos Kotzathanasis HanCinema "Bleak Night" is a truly wonderful and very meaningful movie, that benefits the most from the direction, script, and acting, as it presents a very serious issue through an alternative point-of-view. Jan 6, 2019 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member A really realistic and sincere depiction of suicide. Genuinely amazing movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Audience Member My alltime favourtie korean movie. It is beautifully shot, and the actors are perfect. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Audience Member Bleak Night is representative of what I love about modern independent Korean cinema - its pointed psychological insights into the dark uncurrents of the conservative Korean patriarchal society, at the cusp of rapid industrialization/modernization. Though its heavygoing themes of loyalty, brotherhood and suicide aren't likely to go down well for those looking for a light escapist movie with emotional closure on a Saturday, Bleak Night resonates. An acutely observed character piece, it throws some narrative surprises through its non-linear construction (though some may come off muddled by it) and emotionally poignant vignettes/repartee that rings true of how high school boys would behave. Central to the plot is the fascinating Ki-tae, a cocky (and troubled) latchkey kid, who tries to command respect from his peers by instilling fear in them and emotional manipulation. But we gradually discover an insecure complex (and possibly latent homosexual tendency) belies his arrogant, off-putting, macho and intimidating demeanor. It can be inferred that his non-existent parents are the result of his behavior, although it is never clearly drawn. Key to Ki-tae's life are his two best friends, Dong-yoon and Hee-jun. As Ki-tae's initially domineering character turns more curmudgeon-like, they each begin to drift away from him. Ending in Ki-tae's suicide. A nuanced indie that certainly deserved all the accolades it had gotten...only that it deserves to be seen by more! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member I've seen this movie last year, and I remember it was pretty good. It was dark, and very realistic!
