Critics Consensus

Penguins of Madagascar is fast and brightly colored enough to entertain small children, but too frantically silly to offer real filmgoing fun for the whole family.

Roxana Hadadi Punch Drunk Critics There are enough sight gags and silly jokes in Penguins of Madagascar to make children laugh. But a generation-spanning film, this one isn't. Rated: 2.5/5 Jan 9, 2017 Full Review Paul Byrnes Sydney Morning Herald The jokes are never-ending and multilayered, calculated so that adults do not get bored -- which is important, because they buy the tickets. It's all bolted together with precision and good humour, although not much whimsy. Rated: 3.5/5 Jan 7, 2015 Full Review David Stratton The Australian Children will probably enjoy them and the animation is of a high standard. More wit and less frenetic action might have given the film more appeal to parents. Rated: 3/5 Jan 7, 2015 Full Review Cory Woodroof Williamson Home Page This spin off is a breezy good time chocked full of smart humor and a nicely developed story. Feb 11, 2022 Full Review Nick Levine NME (New Musical Express) Penguins of Madagascar is a reasonably diverting romp featuring a few visually arresting set-pieces, including a fun scene showing the penguins aboard gondolas in Venice, but there's not really enough here to keep grown-ups fully engaged... Rated: 3/5 May 26, 2021 Full Review Richard Crouse Richard Crouse Good, zany fun. No lessons will be learned, no morals taught, nothing gained but a good time at the movies. BRizz 2 Penguins of Madagascar is a fun and energetic spinoff from the beloved Madagascar franchise by DreamWorks Animation. While the original films did a great job introducing us to this quirky group of penguins, led by Skipper, Rico, Private, and my personal favorite, Kowalski, this movie takes them on their own unique path—separate from the original Madagascar storyline. That said, this film doesn’t quite feel like a natural extension of the franchise. It lacks some of the heart and familiarity of the earlier films, especially for those who haven’t seen Madagascar and therefore miss the context of where the penguins came from. I wish the movie had included a bit more background for newcomers or casual viewers. The animation is vibrant and sharp, and the addition of new characters—while adorable—felt underutilized. They were introduced, served their moment in this one story, and then disappeared without any further development or return in later entries. That was a bit disappointing, especially for characters that had charm and potential. This film is clearly aimed at a younger audience, and for that demographic, I think it works well. It’s silly, fast-paced, and filled with visual gags that younger kids will enjoy. But as someone in my 40s, I found it hard to stay engaged the whole time. The pacing felt drawn out, and it just didn’t land for me the way some animated films do when they balance humor for both kids and adults. That said, I wouldn’t call it a bad movie—it’s definitely entertaining for families, and I’d recommend it for children or fans of the penguins themselves. But it’s not a film I see myself revisiting anytime soon. 🎬 Fun, quirky, and kid-friendly, but not quite built for older audiences. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/24/25 Full Review master gaming h Too many jokes for adults to enjoy just as much as the kids, however, the plot is not childish enough for the parent to want to jump out of their seat and leave the room. The soundtrack is also excellently composed, especially for a kids movie. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/21/25 Full Review Audience Member I love these bad boys. Its funny that the episodes of it are still on air. Im waiting for a new season plz Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/13/25 Full Review Read all reviews
