What to Know

Critics Consensus

Despite Dakota Johnson's best efforts, the chaotically anachronistic Persuasion fails to convince as a worthwhile Austen adaptation.

Audience Says

Whether you're annoyed or entertained by its modern touches, Persuasion definitely isn't your grandmother's Austen adaptation.

Mark Kermode Kermode and Mayo's Take (YouTube) If you take it completely on its own terms and don't see it as an Austen adaptation, there's stuff in it that is fun. Feb 6, 2024 Full Review Tom Shone The Times (UK) There’s nothing wrong with updating Austen, but this isn’t so much updating the book as performing a gut renovation. Rated: 1/5 Aug 24, 2022 Full Review Rachel Cunliffe New Statesman A joyful, tongue in cheek and thoroughly self-aware parody. Jul 29, 2022 Full Review Francesca Steele iNews.co.uk The Regency romcom comes with impressive credentials, but it's a complete mess. Rated: 1/5 Dec 11, 2024 Full Review Daniel Allen Loud and Clear Reviews Austen has been refashioned before. But Persuasion wants both worlds – the updated story and the historical setting. However, not only does this modern edge not gel with the original novel, but it leads to a questionable tone. Stephen C Success in 1 hour and 49 minutes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated PG for Some Suggestive References!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/30/25 Full Review Danielle S I wish they didn't do a modern take to it. It just really ruined it for me. If they made it into a modern day adaptation in 2020s London or NYC then sure. I just hate it when they do stuff like this and ruin a classic. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/18/25 Full Review Sara W I loved this film. I don’t care that it isn’t classical Jane Austen. 1. The cinematography was stunning. 2. Dakota Johnson played the role with an ease and playfulness that requires tact. She eloquently portrayed every single one of those emotions from playful to heartbroken. 3. It was relatable. Period. As a woman, who has experienced the full range of human emotions, it’s easy to wrap yourself in this expansive blanket of emotions. It made me laugh, it made me cry, it made me squeal, and it made me cry again. The comedic timing was spot on. The varied personalities all fit well together, and created a story that was engaging. Enjoy the ride as it is. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/18/25 Full Review June F This film wasn't so much a wink to Jane Austen as it was a smirk. In terms of costumes, characterizations, dialogues and accents, it didn't seem to know what century it was in. You can't have a willing suspension of disbelief if you can't immerse yourself into a work of art. But if you're going to get into an 18th century mindset, where women have little social worth unless and until they are married (the number one preoccupation of all Jane Austen's protagonists), then it's just distracting to have characters use modern slang, espouse contemporary social mores and pretend that the very real class and racial divisions of the time didn't exist. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/16/25 Full Review S F I loved it! An Austen fan having devoured her wonderful novels (multiple times) from teenage years. I have watched this version on Netflix multiple times and I can’t help feeling that Jane Austen too would have loved it. It captures the irony and satire beautifully Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/10/25 Full Review Co D i’m a sucker for jane austen’s adaptations and i loved this one too, even if it was different!
