Synopsis
After reforming the church, economy and education to modernize his country and open it to the West, Russia's Peter the Great (Nikolay Simonov), faces a number of plots by those angered by the reformations. Dismayed by his son Alexei's (Nikolai Cherkasov) disinterest in governing, Peter threatens to disinherit him and place him in a monastery. Using Alexei to rally around, rebels plan to overthrow Peter -- and the monarch seizes Alexei, accuses him of treason and tortures him for information.
