      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Peter von Kant finds François Ozon making a nervy attempt to build on a Fassbinder classic -- and succeeding more often than he fails.

Matthew P Great performances. I'm an Ozon fan ("Swimming Pool") and he really allows the audience to spend time with these characters. Plus, the music's great, too. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Im not sure what to think about this. There might be some reference to cinema history and Fassbender, but aside from that the movie doesnt offer much. The plot happens almost only in one place which I really liked and the butler Karl was hilarious, other than that, the movie felt like thousands of gut punches. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Stephen C LOL, the funniest 01 hour: and 24 minutes ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Tara Brady Irish Times Ozon’s translation is a playful addition to the canon. It may lack the bitterness that Fassbinder skilfully worked into his film and its title, but it compensates with unmissable glass-throwing, door-slamming romantic agony. Rated: 5/5 Jan 3, 2023 Full Review Kevin Maher Times (UK) For anyone who has seen that movie [The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant]... there’s plenty to enjoy here, as Ozon tweaks, twists and sporadically subverts the original and infuses it with ironic camp. Rated: 3/5 Jan 3, 2023 Full Review Juan Barquin Little White Lies Moments that shine through, but feels too much like an intellectual experiment. Rated: 2/5 Dec 28, 2022 Full Review Stephanie Bunbury Deadline Hollywood Daily This is maestro on maestro -- and there is no question that Ozon makes it his own. Sep 19, 2023 Full Review Juan Pablo Russo EscribiendoCine Ozon manages to explore universal themes in a novel way. [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 6/10 Jun 20, 2023 Full Review Chris Wasser Irish Independent It’s a tad too farcical for its own good, but Ménochet is excellent as a tragic, tormented artist -- and that 85-minute running time is ideal.
