Zom L Phantasm IV is the kind of sequel that feels less like a full movie and more like a patchwork of unused ideas and leftover footage stitched together just to keep the series alive. It tries to dig deeper into the mythology of the Tall Man and the strange dreamlike universe Don Coscarelli created, but instead of clarity, it mostly delivers confusion. The film leans heavily on recycled scenes from the original Phantasm—flashbacks and unused footage that remind you how much better the first film was. While it’s meant to feel nostalgic, it often comes across as filler, making the pacing sluggish and disjointed. The surreal tone is still there, but it lacks the energy, scares, and creativity that made the earlier entries work. That said, there’s one saving grace: Reggie Bannister. He has always been the heart of this franchise, and here he continues to bring the same mix of humor, warmth, and unlikely hero charm that keeps the series from collapsing under its own weight. Reggie’s wisecracks and offbeat charisma give Phantasm its soul, and without him these movies would feel much colder and far less entertaining. Honestly, he might just be the best thing about the entire series. Angus Scrimm is still magnetic as the Tall Man, and A. Michael Baldwin keeps continuity intact, but it’s Reggie’s presence that adds the much-needed spark. Sadly, even he can’t fully save a movie bogged down by meandering storytelling, awkward pacing, and a budget that couldn’t match its ambitions. In the end, Phantasm IV feels more like a bridge to Phantasm V than a satisfying standalone film. Hardcore fans might appreciate the backstory hints, surreal imagery, and of course Reggie’s humor, but casual viewers will likely find it frustrating, dull, confusing, and ultimately disappointing. This is just not a worthy sequel in this franchise. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 09/14/25 Full Review Candace W It really was just a rehash of all the old movies and just really boring. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 09/10/25 Full Review James B Phantasm IV Oblivion was decently alright but is just reused deleted scenes from previous films still it's ok. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/05/25 Full Review Justin T This is definitely better than the previous, far more interesting and without the comic undertones. This actually takes some of the best ideas of the previous films and makes the pacing better. One strange thing I noticed was that they all have so much makeup on like it is a film from the early days of cinema, way too much makeup and once you’ve noticed it then it’s hard to unsee it. This is a complete generational story, it starts when they were kids in 1979 and continues until they are old men in 2016. It doesn’t mess around trying to be something else. It really is quite amazing how they tied it into the other films. It’s more like the first than all the rest and that’s a good thing. Definitely worth watching if you liked the first two. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 12/12/24 Full Review Liam D Easily the worst phantasm movie. An incoherent mess that feels like it was rushed to release (that’s because it was) Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/26/24 Full Review Read all reviews
