Phantom Thread's finely woven narrative is filled out nicely by humor, intoxicating romantic tension, and yet another impressively committed performance from Daniel Day-Lewis.

Alec C The line between love and obsession is as thin as a thread through a needle! A popular dressmaker finds a muse in a waitress that soon becomes his lover, but there conflicting personalities result in some disturbing and unhealthy complexities. Grounded by Daniel Day-Lewis's performance, we are unsure if we should be rooting for these characters as there desire for each other reaches some troubling extremes! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/04/24 Full Review Patricia P This is a dreadful movie that pretends to be more intelligent than it is by using cheap devices, i.e., long meaningful stares that go on far too long, understanding smiles that shouldn't be understanding at all since the character knows what is going to happen to him, reactions that make no sense in the situation, etc. Awful. Just awful. The one star I gave is for the beautiful rooms, not for the ugly dresses the main character devotes his life to creating in those rooms. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/24/24 Full Review CRF1 Superior acting by cast. As always, DDL brings the character to life. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/31/24 Full Review Jeff M I am second to none in my admiration for the films of Paul Thomas Anderson (PTA to those of us who know him well). His MAGNOLIA is on my top ten of all time list, and with the glaring exception of INHERENT VICE, he hasn't made a movie that I haven't liked a lot if not outright loved. A PTA movie is an event. This is one of his best, and markedly different than anything else that he has done. It's hard to pinpoint exactly what made this such a special viewing experience for me, but I became more and more enthralled as the movie went on, and by the end, the subtle power of what I saw started to sink in. This is one of those movies that requires more than one viewing. I was enamored by the representations of both creative and romantic obsession. Reynolds Woodcock (one of the great names in modern cinema) lives for his work and finds everything else around him a distraction. When Alma comes into the picture, she is equally determined to make him part of his passion, and her methods become increasingly desperate. Day Lewis and Manville received the Oscar nominations, and both are superlative, but Krieps is the secret weapon here, and she comes across like a young Meryl Streep both in countenance and style. The relationship between Reynolds and Alma is one of the most complicated and fascinating I've seen in awhile. This is a quietly devastating movie, and one of those experiences where you don't realize the full impact until you think about it afterwards. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/26/24 Full Review Alec B A surprisingly film from Anderson, and not just because of the Gothic and psychologically fraught romance at the center. There's a quiet patience to the filmmaking that feels like something from another era. A thing of fascinating beauty. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/03/24 Full Review Sude S espite some beautiful cinematography here and there, there are times where candlelight turns every scene to everyone's favorite vomit yellow. Compare that to Kubrick's masterpiece Barry Lyndon. What's even more shameful is the lifeless camerawork doesn't even begin to highlight the beauty of the truly amazing colors. Although this Anderson moves the camera much more than his other Anderson counterpart, Wes, Paul somehow managed to make it even more lifeless. Whether it's a slow pan or a static shot, it never makes a difference. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/02/24 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Brandon Taylor New Yorker A simple thing, a robe, and yet it captures so much of what it feels like to have passed so close to disaster... Mar 27, 2023 Full Review J. R. Jones Chicago Reader Anderson has trouble coaxing this struggle to any sort of emotional climax; its fanciful, symbolic ending is the sort critics will praise for its careful ambiguity even as they overlook its narrative desperation. Mar 10, 2020 Full Review J. Hoberman The New York Review of Books Anderson makes movies that may refuse to explain themselves but nevertheless manage to engage the viewer, in part because he tends to cut from confined spaces to open ones as if inviting us to enter them. Mar 7, 2019 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies “Phantom Thread” reveals a dialed-back Paul Thomas Anderson in top form. His writing is spellbinding. His direction is daring and confident. The look of the film is as beautiful as rare Flemish lace. Rated: 5/5 Aug 24, 2022 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Phantom Thread has more feeling and emotional range in its restrained drama than some of his other works - this is certainly the most raw emotion he's produced since Punch Drunk Love (2002).
