James Marsh South China Morning Post While perhaps not a sporting classic for the ages, Ping Pong: The Triumph should get its intended audience on its feet. Rated: 3/5 Mar 16, 2023 Full Review Carla Hay Culture Mix It's a very formulaic and predictable 'underdog' sports story, but there are enough riveting scenes of table tennis/ping pong competitions to keep viewers interested. These action scenes are well-filmed, even though the screenplay is somewhat bland. Feb 26, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews

Mr. Cai If you are familiar with that era, and if you are familiar with table tennis, you should go and see this movie. The casting is on point and the actors really capture the essence of these real life characters, even for the support characters. The plot is interesting, tight, well written, and exciting at times. The movie is well paced and despite the long running time it never felt dragging. Humor is sprinkled throughout even at the most unexpected places. The matches are historically accurate, and really capture the atmosphere, excitement, and nervousness of watching these matches live. They did change up the names of the people involved unfortunately but you do immediately recognize these characters. There is little to no preaching and it focuses more on the complexities and nuances of handling team dynamics, players and coaches alike, as well as politics and demands and expectations from upper management, as opposed to falling to the straightforward "we trained hard and won" sport movie trope, despite what the title and the trailer may lead one to believe. Chinese ping-pong players on the national team, they always train hard. However there are a lot more than "just training hard" to prevail. This movie deserves to get more attention.
