When the woodworker Geppetto (Christian Rub) sees a falling star, he wishes that the puppet he just finished, Pinocchio (Dickie Jones), could become a real boy. In the night, the Blue Fairy (Evelyn Venable) grants Geppetto's wish and asks Jiminy Cricket (Cliff Edwards) to serve as the wooden boy's conscience. But the naive and trusting Pinocchio falls into the clutches of the wicked Honest John (Walter Catlett), who leads him astray to the sinful Pleasure Island.

[It's] a delight and at times will take your breath away, for the limits of the animated cartoon have been blown so wide open that some of the original wonder of pictures - wonder and terror too, as when that train roared up into the camera - is restored. Go to Full Review

Either Walt Disney wished upon a star to make such a gorgeous film, or he was just insane enough to work hard at it; I’m thinking it was both. Go to Full Review

Pat S Jan 13 A vast improvement from the studio’s first 1937 venture with ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarves’ Pinocchio brings both charm, nostalgia and magic to the screen with timeless moments like the ever-so-hummable ear-warm ‘When You Wish Upon a Star’ to Jiminy Cricket’s classic and irresistible charisma. Though the film comes with some odd and outdated storytelling moments, nevertheless, Pinocchio will continue to ‘Wish Upon a Star’ bringing everlasting joy and happiness for generations to come, certifying itself as a true Disney Classic in the animation canon. The first Pinocchio movie I watched was The Adventures of Pinocchio (1996) . It was... okay, I don't think the movie was bad but it's just fine. The second Pinocchio movie I watched is the live action Pinocchio (2022) . It was... also okay, it's better than the 1996 film but still just fine. The Animated Pinocchio (1940) is better than the first two, but it's still just okay. Like the Animated Snow White (1937) I surprisingly didn’t hate it and didn’t get bored by it, even though I know most of the plot. It's better than the Animated Snow White (1937), but it's still just okay. Once again the animation is the best part about the movie! An improvement from the Animated Snow White (1937) in every way! The escape from Monstro is so cool! AND THIS CAME FROM YEAR 1940! The characters are just okay, there's not a lot of characters that I hate or enjoy. I think Pinocchio is kinda the best character in the movie but he is still just okay. Rotten Tomatoes give this movie a 100% which means this movie is the best Walt Disney Animation Studio film ever, which is understandable. (Even tho The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh is also a 100% from Rotten Tomatoes.) There's nothing a lot to say about this movie, the world knows about this movie. It is a classic for generations to come. 3/5 A iconic movie, but it was just okay. The music, expressions, story and editing are superb. It still stirs so many emotions after decades of watching it countless times: from joy, to pity, to horror and finally to happiness and hope. Lots of life lessons for children and adults alike. A gem. See more Jens B @Jens97 Aug 25 I didn't really like "Pinocchio" as a child, so it rarely ended up on the VCR. Except for the Pleasure Island sequence, the postcard-idyllic kitsch factor was too much for me; none of the songs were uplifting, and both Geppetto and the cricket were quite annoying. From today's perspective, the animation technique in the second Disney film is exciting; you can clearly see how the animation was done with great attention to detail, but it hadn't yet reached the routine perfection that would soon follow. The cat is very cute. I never need to see it again, but it was nice to watch it again. See more Read all reviews
