What to Know

Critics Consensus

It strains to up the gore and self-awareness of it predecessor, and -- despite some game celebrity cameos -- the result is a dispiriting echo of 2010's horror-comedy.

Mark Olsen Los Angeles Times Tacky and intermittently entertaining is all"Piranha 3DD"sets out to be, and that is all this playfully graphic horror-comedy sequel accomplishes. Rated: 3/5 Jun 4, 2012 Full Review Kyle Anderson Entertainment Weekly The first half of the film merely treads water in anticipation for the eventual bloodbath, and once the teeth start gnawing, it's just one laborious machination after another to get to the end of the movie, which stops without much of a resolution. Rated: D+ Jun 2, 2012 Full Review Justin Lowe The Hollywood Reporter With most of the running time devoted to setting up and over-explaining the premise, mayhem gets short shrift. Jun 2, 2012 Full Review Patrick Cavanaugh The Wolfman Cometh The previous film was surprisingly delightful, with those successes being totally absent from this follow-up. Rated: 2/5 Sep 24, 2023 Full Review Mike Massie Gone With The Twins The gore is a bit limited at first, while the computer-animated chompers still look terribly fake, but the over-the-top violence soon supplements the routine nakedness. Rated: 4/10 Dec 2, 2020 Full Review Richard Propes TheIndependentCritic.com The film also features gratuitous cameos from the likes of Gary Busey being Gary Busey and, in a more extended cameo, David Hasselhoff being David Hasselhoff. I'd say it actually has moments that I'll somewhat remember (unlike the prior entry). There are three bits I minorly liked: Ving Rhames, David Hasselhoff and the David Koechner head gag. That is literally it, though. It's a bad movie, no question. It even feels like a pale imitation of the previous flick, which is quite something given that 2010 release isn't even anything good itself. The humans in this are extremely dull, while the piranha barely registered to me whilst watching. At least the run time is short. Danielle Panabaker is 'the best' cast member, aside from Rhames and Hasselhoff who steal the show with comparatively small roles. Adrian Martinez's character almost works, while I did like seeing Christopher Lloyd return. Interesting to see Matt Lintz, way before his role in 'The Walking Dead'. Also, and I know I'm taking the lore of these things too seriously by saying this, but weren't the piranha supposed to be massive in this one; based on the end of the first film. This second movie ends with a tease of walking piranha, which is just as lousy an idea as the flying piranha from 'Piranha II: The Spawning'. Thankfully, the aforementioned didn't happen as this didn't get a sequel. How long we giving it until someone somewhere decides to remake 'Piranha' for a third time? My money's on 2030. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/25/25 Full Review Luis Otavio F They managed to make something that was already horrible, something dark worse. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/04/25 Full Review Isha B Piranha 3DD 2012 Comedy Horror Comedy Thriller and Comedy Mystery Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/06/24 Full Review Jules N Cette suite tombe excessivement dans la comédie pas forcément drôle à tout les moments. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/26/24 Full Review Steve D The original wasn't good, this is worse. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 10/18/23 Full Review Read all reviews
