Eddie Harrison film-authority.com …Mario Bava’s talent for optical effects, miniatures and unmatched gift for colour and composition makes this something of an event for sci-fi fans…one of those rare, one-in-a-million movies where base lead somehow becomes solid gold… Rated: 5/5 May 31, 2024 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy Bava injects a startling amount of moody atmosphere and arresting visuals into his low-budget feature. Rated: 3/4 Jul 31, 2022 Full Review Mike Massie Gone With The Twins Perhaps the most pronounced contribution of this obscure Mario Bava thriller is its influence on Ridley Scott. Rated: 5/10 Aug 27, 2020 Full Review Grant Watson Fiction Machine It is cheaply made, but Bava and his crew innovative wonderfully to give it all a strong tone and atmosphere. Rated: 8/10 Jun 30, 2020 Full Review Sean Axmaker Stream on Demand If you like Italian sci-fi, with its shiny, phony plastic miniatures and sprawling Cinecitta studio sets, this is one of the best, with unbelievable black leather fashions with yellow piping and headhugging skull caps. Omar G Planet of the Vampires, Terror in Space (1965), 4/5 stars. Before Alien (1979) and Prometheus (2012), two crews follow the signal of a strange planet, there are strange skeletons of corpses giants of aliens, these were before the egineers. The uniforms. Captain Mark Markary seems to me to have been genetically or mechanically altered since he is the oldest but also the strongest, he hits younger people, he is the alpha male and has a sexy female with a nice ass as an assistant, Sanya played by Norma Bengell, I think she was his sexual partner on the mission and followed him to his cabin to satisfy him. Captain Mark Markary played by Barry Sullivan, he seems like the father and Sanya his wife, Wess is like the son, Evi Marandi as Tiona is pretty but Norma Bengell is sexier because of her ass. The ending has a twist like Rod Serling's The Twilight Zone. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/18/24 Full Review Carlos I I know this has quite the cult following these days, and I was hoping I could join the cult, but this just didn't quite work on me. There is lots of cool going on in this, and Bava's style is unmissable, hell it feels like this and Danger Diabolik were filmed back to back. But the cool style was not enough to keep me hanging on. The story just bored me a bit... Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/16/24 Full Review Jithin K My first Mario Bava film and I can certainly see his visual mastery in the way the camera and colour are used in this movie. But only if he also had the budget to make this really good. There are so many aspects of this movie that are dragged down because of lack of budget as well as the dubbing style of Italian films of the time where international actors all speak their language while shooting, not understanding each other and then dubbing over it. There are instances where it is clear that some actors don't know what the other actor is actually saying. The script itself is very interesting and surprisingly nihilistic for a film that looks like this. The 60s retro-futuristic space suits will surely make you think this is sillier than it is. The discovery of Alien Spaceship and stuff definitely influenced Alien and even the music in those moments felt very reminiscent. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/07/24 Full Review Thom G The Demon Planet is an aesthetic, atmospheric, colorful, and campy horror film set on an alien planet, and in these respects, it’s worth watching! However, the viewing experience is also painful... The bad acting and dialogues, the incoherences and inconsistencies, and the overemphasis on the captain as an omniscient father figure to whom everyone defers are hard to ignore. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/13/24 Full Review David W The one disadvantage this movie has is that it was made a year before the original series of Star Trek and on a shoestring budget. To say that it is dated is a kindness. Having said that, it must have been incredibly scary to those who watched it in theaters in 1965, and its influence is obvious on the likes of Ridley Scott's "Alien" (1979) and John Carpenter's "The Thing" (1982) as well as numerous films that came after. If you can put up with how cheesy the sets and special effects are, it's a very good movie. This Mario Bava guy was the genuine article. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/23/24 Full Review Alec B It's relatively easy to see how this film had so much influence on the likes of "Alien" and "Prometheus". That said it is a little surprising to see something from this era with all of the silly visual hallmarks of mid-20th century Science Fiction but with a consistent undercurrent of nihilistic dread. Credit goes to Bava who had imagination beyond the budgetary limitations. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/24 Full Review Read all reviews
